I have been asking other people and they are suggesting that even to print black ink, Dell printers need colour ink too. Which sounds stupid, but if that's the way it works, I can't argue.
I don't think this is a sensor problem. It knows that the black ink is 100% full. It also knows that the colour ink is 100% empty. Both of these are true. But why can't I just print with black ink? Do Dell computers require both colour ink and black regardless, forcing me to buy colour ink I'll never use and that will just dry up again?
The sensors in the Dell Series ink cartridges require the cartridges to be in the printer to work. If a sensor fails, it can possibably cause the printer to stop working.
Are you sure you have the ink cartridges seated properly. There is a lip on them and if not seated properly, it may also cause the error message.
I'm pretty sure it's in there properly. The printer can detect the colour ink cartridge-it constantly reminds me that the actual ink levels are at 0 by constantly beeping when it is on. If I try to print anything, including a test page, it says "The printer will not print until the Colour Cartridge is replaced."
Regardless, why should it matter if my colour ink has no ink left when I want to print with my black ink? The cartridge is still in there too, if the printer needs it to be there.
The Dell Series cartridges need to have just enough ink for the sensor to read properly, to print. Most manufacteres of printers are now putting sensors in their ink cartridges, so it's just not Dell. Your Dell Printer was made for Dell by Lexmark and they are also using the sensors. If the sensore cannot be read by the printer, it stops working.

RedRabbitLady,
The Dell Series ink cartridges have sensors in them. I suspect your sensor might have failed.

Try shaking the cartridge before reseating it to dislodge the cartridge.
