Jamie66,

If you copy a document, it copies the white background as purple?

Try changing the copy settings to default or maybe lower the settings?

Same with scan.

Thanks for the reply but I'm not getting anywhere.  I changed the defaults to factory settings via the printer control panel.  I can't see any way of doing it through the computer.

When I tried to scan it worked fine and I was able to print a normal A4 page of text (with a white background).  I thought it was sorted so I tried to copy the same page and it was back to the purple page - using so much ink that it came out wet and starting to curl up.  Now when I try scanning again it is the dark backgound on screen.  I can see the settings both on the printer (for copying) and in the scanning dialogue box are set at the mid point for brightness so I don't understand what the problem is.

Any help appreciated.

Jamie,

Start, control panel, printers and faxes, your printer, printer preferences. What is the setting on? I have mine set for normal.

You don't have a photo cartridge installed, do you?

Hi Rick,

My setting was automatic so I changed it to normal, but it hasn't made any difference to the scanned images.  They are still very dark.  I haven't tried copying as I don't want to waste any more ink.

I just have the normal black and colour cartridges - no photo cartridge.

Jamie,

Are you using Dell Series cartridges?

Did you try to reset the printer to default settings?

Yes, 2 new dell series cartridges.  They are fine... printing's not a problem.

As mentioned above I did change the defaults to factory settings and it worked (or something worked) temporarily.  I've run through that routine a few times since but to no avail.

Any other ideas?

Jamie,

I was looking at the Dell V313 Printer manual. I have a Dell V715w Wireles Printer and I use the default settings and don't seem to have any issues.

Hi Rick,

I don't understand why you think it's a problem with the printhead.  The printer is printing fine for normal documents and is printing exactly what it scans for scanned images.  I can see the preview and it's a darkened image which prints just as you would expect.  I just want it to scan the text and leave the rest of the white page white not dark purple.

Thanks for making the effort but I'm really not getting anywhere with this.  I thought there must be a setting that needs adjusted through the computer.  I've adjusted to factory defaults using the printer control panel but that doesn't help.  I have downloaded the latest drivers for the printer and use windows 7 if that would make a difference but it shouldn't as this is a fairly new printer.

Jamie,

I was wondering is a little extra ink got to the printhead and maybe needed wiped off with a link-free cloth.

You siad the printer is fine for printing documents, then the setting is on the printer.

The printer, when copying used the settings on the printer and the ink and paper. No computer interaction is needed, so this make the issue something with the printer. I don't understand is when you said your scan looks the same, unless the scanner bulb is the issue. It's unusual for a bulb to go out so quickly, but cannot be ruled out. You could try changing the settings on the printer to adjust for the issue. maybe using a lighter/darker setting will fix the issue.

Jamie66,

Printing is ok, so then it must have something to do with the bulb slowly failing. If the printer is under warranty, which is doubtful, you could contact Dell. NOt sure if Dell could help or not. Don't pay a fee for their help. The price of the printer is not worth the price of their help.

I have adjusted the light/dark setting to the lightest but the background is still dark (athough not as dark).

Jamie,

Blubs can fail on one end, the other end in the middle, it varies.

If it's under warranty, then conatc Dell Tech Support. I thought Printer warranties were for short periods of time, like 30 days.

It was bought in June last year on std warranty which I guess is 12 months.  If it's as you fear (failing bulb) would the whole area be dark?  If for example I scan a photo (which only takes up part of the area) the surrounding area on the scanned preview isn't dark.  If the bulb was failing surely the whole scan would be dark?  It seems to be specifically restricted to what it sees as the document being scanned.  Maybe the software excludes anything else which makes it appear white.  I don't know - just guessing.
