You have two options.

Assuming you're using a wireless router, you can connect the printer to the desktop and share it. You would have to leave the desktop on at all times that you might want to print from the laptop.

You can get a wireless print server (Linksys, D-Link and others make these) which will make your printer independent of any wired connection. Some may include a lan port as well, to allow your desktop to print via wire.

Dell sells a 3300 wireless adapter for the 1710. I have both the 1710 and the adapter working well on my home network. We have two laptops and a pc. Dell sells the 3300 wireless adapter for about $99 and it is compatable for this model printer. I have a post on this forum labeled "Dell 1710 and 3300 wireless adapter that addresses some set up issues with this adapter.
