Automatic numbering/incrementing in MS Publisher

I've checked MS Publisher (2000) and I don't see anything about numbering. 

I would like to make some (paper) tickets and have a number on each one, and if it's possible have the program automatically increment the tickets as they are printed.  Is this possible with Publisher? 

Maybe I could use Access or Excel for the numbering, but I don't know how I would get the ticket format into one of those.

It looks to me like I "can't get there from here" but I thought I'd post just to see.
