Clip Art

My Inspiron 6000 came without Clip Art installed.  I can turn it on, but everything I plug into "search" comes up empty.   I put my Works Suite 2005 disc into the CD/DVD drive, clicked on Clip Art thinking I would get a message saying "Not Installed...Would you like to Install Now,"but it doesn't appear.  Does anyone have any idea how I can get Clip Art into my Inspiron 6000?  Bear in mind, my "6000" is NOT connected to the Internet.  I use it for Word Processing only and don't intend to ever connect it to the Internet.

Thanks,

Try in add/remove, highlight your works suite, click change; if it is like office you will get an option to add or remove components.

Hello, JRosenfeld:

I followed your suggestion, got into clip art on add/remove components, and at the end of the installation process, got a message saying clip art had been successfully installed.  When I went back into WORD and hit "Insert Clip Art," then plugged into search the word "flowers," I got exactly 2 pictures.  I can only assume that very little clip art is on my Works Suite 2005.  I don't understand this since my computer at work has the same version of WORD as I do on my laptop and on the work computer we have more clip art than you can view in a week!  Came with the computer.

If you, or anyone else, has any idea why this is, or how I can remedy the problem--without hooking my laptop to the internet--please let me know.

Thanks again, JRosenfeld

Squirrely,

I work with Clip Art a lot with my students in the classes that I teach.  We've recentely upgraded to Office 2003 and felt the effects of the  Office Clip Art no longer being available without the internet connection being active.

In Office 2000 (our prior version), all Clip Art was installed on each of the computers that the students had access to.  If they wanted additional clip art, we would direct them to Microsoft's "on-line" site.  Now, with the recent push to 2003, the only way to get the entire library is by looking for Clip Art by ticking off Search in All Collections and Everywhere (and that is including the web).  Microsoft, I suppose, assumes that we all have a broadband connection.  When our connection at school goes down (which is often the case), my students cannot get any clip art for their documents other than the very few that are installed with the program.

I just tried looking for clip art on my Word 2003 searching for flowers.  First I did a search in My Collections (on my computer).  I got no matches.  Then I did a search Everywhere.  I got dozens of matches.  I looked in the Preview/Properties of a variety of the images:  the majority have the following as the file location:  Catalog: http://office.microsoft.com.  So, it appears that most of the clip art images are indeed online.

I know that years ago (and I still have it) Broderbund produced a ClickArt package of 200,000 graphics on a series of CDs with a reference book.  I used it when I had Windows 98, and it still works under Win XP.  Most of them are WMF files and they resize and reproduce beautifully.  I don't think the entire set was more than $20.  I just looked on the Broderbund web site; they have a ClickArt 400,000 for $19.99 (others are even cheaper:  click here).  If you're really into ClipArt, this might be an avenue.  I've used it more times than I can remember and the images are truly superior to what Microsoft has online or anywhere else within their Office Suite.

Edit:  I had purchased this software years ago at CompUSA.  It does not seem to be available there anymore, but I'm sure other stores selling software will have similar clip art software.  Most seem to have a notation for "support and additional images online" so you may not get all of the images they say are included in the package on the CDs.  Read the label carefully.  When I purchased this set, I think the fastest internet connection around was with a 14.4 modem and hardly anyone had it, so everything was on the CDs.  This set does still work on my Win XP Pro computer now with Office 2003, as .wmf files are still the same as they were way back when.  Shop around.  Many of the clip art packages seemed to include a lot of images for the web, which you obviously don't want (and they don't enlarge very well anyway).

Yes, many images available from the Microsoft site (and many other reputable sites on the web that offer royalty-free clip art, too).  But without an internet connection, you're out of luck.  I was walking back to the time when an internet connection was not active or available and trying to give Squirrely other places to look.  I still use those CDs that I bought years ago.  Clear and reliable images, and they're not "goofy looking" (in my students' opinion) like some of the Microsoft clip art has become.  We've come a long way (or maybe we haven't) in the nearly 8 years since I bought this CD set.  :smileywink:

Squirrelly,

You're welcome.  Good luck.  Look around and you'll find some good stuff, I'm sure, and at a really reasonable price.  Make sure you look at the type of files on the CD (.wmf files are images that reproduce very well in Word and Publisher documents; .gif images are mainly intended for the web and don't enlarge with good clarity from the original without editing software).  And remember, sometimes you find some of these software packages in the darndest places! :smileyhappy:

Dear Txtchr

Thank you for your so well-detailed response to my question about Clip Art.  I do believe you're right that computer companies can't conceive of anyone have a computer not connected to the internet.  Most people I know can't imagine what I do with my laptop if I can't use it for Googling.

I will try your suggestions as soon as I get a few hours to myself to do so.  I can download from the internet onto a CD at work, and/or check out what's available to Wal-Mart/Best Buy, etc.

Again, thank you so much for all the thought and time you've put into trying to help me solve my problem.
