By-the-by - I also kept the other downloads of the app and tried one of those for the install, too. Same error. Renamed the downloaded file from filename.ext(2) to just filename.ext, in case the error was the result of the filename. No joy. Renamed the directory it installed into, just in case the installshield app looked to see if the app was installed and did not copy files over the old ones. No joy.
The text files that come up if you click on the exe's in the directory of Dell DataSafe Local are the installshield logs. Ii bought the 1710 and a 580 desktop on the same day and BOTH came without the app installed. I tried installing it on my 580 today and ...no joy!!! What the IS log file seems to indicate is a .wim file is missing. The .wim file present is called factory.wim. Could it be the machines ship with the wrong filename or is it more likely the file itself is missing?
And why did the damn app fire up the one time in the other user account?
I could really use some help here. Can't someone at Dell talk to the IS programmers and find out what the error messages in the log file mean and what files should be present in that recovery (d:) drive that the install is looking for?

Can't uninstall as it doesn't show up.
