Getting Outlook Data from Old Hard Drive to New Hard Drive ????

Earlier this week I learned that my operating system was corrupt and needed to be replaced. Rather than reload everything and lose everything on my hard drive,I hired a
technician to add a new hard drive, so that I could retrieve my data from the original. We're up and running now, with both hard drives. However, I can not access my old email, folders, address book, etc. from Outlook Express. I can see that they are still on my old hard drive, but I can't seem to find a way to import them..... I'm running on Windows 98. PLEASE HELP

Thank you

Provided we are talking about Outlook here and not Outlook Express...simply open Outlook, click on FILE, then IMPORT/EXPORT and choose then navigate to the location that has your "personal files" (pst files)on your old drive.  The path for these files can be found by performing a search on the old drive by searching *.pst   .   The pst files are the format for Outlook (OE files are .dbx)

On the other hand, since you say that it is Outlook Express, search for the folder containing the .dbx files. I think that in W98, it would be in c:\windows\application data subfolder, but my memory is somewhat hazy. If you want to save the data copying to the new drive, save the whole folder.

If you have Outlook Express (part of Windows) already installed on the new drive, you can import using File, import, messages, select outlook express (whichever version you had on the old drive), next screen select import mail from a store directory, next screen browse to the folders with your .dbx files. Similarly for the other components shown in the import menu.

I misread the original post. Sorry about that.  JRosenfeld is right about the import and mail.  However I think in the past I have had problems getting OE to find or want to import the mail you want.

If our prior suggestions do not work. Simply locate all the .dbx files on the old drive (these will be inbox.dbx, outbox.dbx, etc) and copy them to your new drive in the correct location.  I think there may be 2 OE folders on your system in 2 different locations.  Unsure on that.  Note I recommend copy dbx rather than move dbx in the event it does not work right you will still have the orginal files intact.  Also note that you will be replacing the .dbx files on your new location thus you may want to rename the extensions on each from .dbx to .db_ or .old and then copy the old files in.

I hate to be a “me too” but I have Outlook 2000 and cannot locate my email or address book files on my old PC. I know I have done this in the past, but no luck with XP.

Explorer is set to show all file types and extensions, but searches come up blank…

Make sure you also have 'show hidden files and folders' checked (it's a radio button rather than a box) (tools, folder options, view tab).

In Windows XP, your Office Outlook .pst file is in

C:\Documents and Settings\yourusername\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook

but the Application data folder is hidden unless you check that box.

Your Outlook Express .dbx files are in

C:\Documents and Settings\yourusername\Local Settings\Application Data\Identities\{8D32DF8B-D3B8-4783-A0C5-FE37E2FC8659}\Microsoft\Outlook Express

Your address book (yourusername.wab) is in

C:\Documents and Settings\yourusername\Application Data\Microsoft\Address Book

If you use search,  under more advanced options, check the first three boxes so it will search the hidden folders and subfolders and include hidden files.

Wow - Thanks JRosenfeld! ! ! I'm making good progress. I got all of my email imported back for both accounts. I'm still having trouble with the address book, the file appears with the the MS wave box and file type of " Mary.wa~" I can't find a way to may it .wab. However, now that I have my old mail, I should be able to recreate my address book with little difficulty. THANKS AGAIN! ! !

I doubt that this would work, but you could try right click, rename and replace the ~ by b. the ~ suggests that it is a temporary file, perhaps created by Outlook Express, see

http://filext.com/detaillist.php?extdetail=wa%7E&Submit3=Go%21

Make sure OE and other apps accessing the address book are closed, then search again for the .wab file.

I use the contacts in Office Outlook, rather than the address book itself, so have no experience using address book (if I look at address book it just has Outlook contacts.

Morygos,

I had a .wa~ file on my system, in addition to the normal .wab address book file. The date of the .wab file was today's date, the .wa~ file was from April 2003. I copied the file to another folder and changed the extension to .wab then created a new account and imported the file into Outlook Express. With the exception of changes I had made since April, all of the addresses were present and correct.

JRosenfeld & Denny,
I've tried what you have suggested but have had no luck. Nothing is allowing me to change the wa~, whether it's a copy or rename. I will recreate it from my emails.

Thanks for the advice,

Morygos
