My Documents files have all disappeared from folder

I have a Latitude D610 that was given to me by my old company (company went bankrupt suddenly last August.)  I have other Dell products at home and I wanted to reconfigure this laptop to contain the same programs, files etc. In the process of working with user names, etc. I may have deleted some connection to the old website (no longer functioning) in Outlook.  That is when my Outlook stopped working and all my file folders disappeared (My DOcuments is empty.)  I have searched My Computer by names of files, ensuring there were no hidden files, and nothing appears.  I suspect this may have to do with User accounts/privileges.  There was an administrator but I pretty much have full access to the laptop.  Two questions:
1) How can I find or determine if these files are still in my computer (perhaps under some other user name - I don't have passwords other than my own?
2) How can I remove any special priviliges, passwords, etc?
I just want a working laptop!
Thanks
Rosa

If a profile is deleted, it is possible ot remove all the files associated with that profile. Windows asks when the profile is deleted. If you answer No, they are still available in a hidden folder under the old user name. If you do not see the old user name, it is probable that they are gone.

Thank you Allan for your response.  I see the user names, but those folders are also empty.  I did a system restore to way before the company closed...still empty.  If they ARE hidden, how can I find them?

Along those lines, how do I take full control of the laptop now, that is, how can I delete old user accounts, info, etc and start again (they still point to the old company....do I have to do a full system reinstall?)

Thank you very much again for your help!

Rva300,

If the files are hidden (and it sounds as though they have simply been removed) you can see them by opening Windows Explorer and going to Tools|Folder Options|View tab and checking "Show hidden files and folders."

The most efficient way to take control of the system is to perform a clean reinstallation of Windows XP. Otherwise you will probably be running across and having to delete bits and pieces of the old installation for months.
