Need help re-installing Microsoft Word 2002 in Works Suite 2006
Greetings Group: Recently, I developed a problem with installation of some Microsoft Security Updates that were attributed to Works XP and Word 2002. Numerous attempts to install these "Important" updates repeatedly failed. I contacted Microsoft and after numerous "back and forths" with them via E-mail, I was advised that the referenced programs were "obviously corrupt and needed to be deleted and reinstalled". I did as they advised and had no problem re-installing Microsoft Works off the Works Suite 2006 software provided by Dell. When I tried to install Word 2002, I recieved two messages. The first advised " Microsoft Works Suite Setup
Installing Microsoft Word
1 more program to install: Office XP Hot Fix"
Shortly after that, I recieved this message:
Setup did not install the following application.
Microsoft Word.
Can anyone provide directions on how to get Word 2002 re-installed? Oh, by the way, the tech from Microsoft dropped me right after the deletion of Works and Word and advised me that since my software was OEM, I must contact Dell to correct the problem. Sure wish he would have told me that before he told me to delete the programs.
Thanks,
Bob in Sacramento, CA

Although you have "OEM" software the free Dell software support is gone (it's only for the first 30 days). I'm surprised you are getting any support, anywhere, as this is an "old" discontinued product (the current version is 2008).
Worksuite 2006 includes Word 2002. How did you"delete" the old Worksuite? If you just deleted the files that could be the problem. The program needs to be properly uninstalled, using the Add/Remove software function in the Control Panel, then the PC restarted and finally a new install of Workssuite 2006. If this is not how you removed and reinstalled that could be the problem.

Ouch! Sure wish I had talked to you before I followed the advice of Microsoft. I hope I don't have to un-install and then re-install the whole Works Suite. I have a lot of data in the Microsoft Money files that I would hate to lose. I do have them backed up on a Seagate USB external drive, but, just as I have had problems with this software, so too do I have problems with the Seagate. As you may have figured out, I'm not very "software savy". I'm 68 and I should be learning more each day but it seems with each click of the clock, more data stored in the grey matter filing system is getting "corrupt" also. As near as I can recall, I did the file removals by inserting the Works Suite CD in the reader and utilized the Install/Repair/Uninstall feature they provided. The Repair feature did nothing for the problem I was having with the Security Updates. So, based on what the gent from Microsoft said, I used the Uninstall feature. As I related in my earlier post, the Works program installed smoothly. When I attempted to install Word 2002, it started installing, then the "Installing bar" stopped moving, then reversed and I received a message advising that Word 2002 did not install. Immediately after I received a message that "Microsoft Works Suite Setup installing Microsoft Word.
1 more program to install: Office XP Hot Fix.
I have searched the install CD files for that Hot Fix as well as everything I could find on the Microsoft web site. I could not locate anything relating to an "Office Hot Fix".
Have you ever heard of the Office XP Hot Fix? Other than a "Magic Wand", do you have any ideas how I can fix this problem? I would consider upgrading the whole package but I regularly log onto a Newsgroup that discusses Microsoft Money and I regularly read about disasters that occur when someone tries to migrate their data from the older programs to the newer programs. if I can avoid that hassle, I'll sure try.
Thanks for you time.

First, I'll be 72 in December so age is not a factor.
Uninstalling using the CD is OK, BUT, did you restart the PC before reinstalling? If not, whatever problem was there initially could still be there if you don't restart the PC before reinstalling. I would uninstall again, using the Add/Remove programs option in the Control Panel, restart the PC and then do another install.
Uninstalling should not touch your user data, that should be in the My Documents folder (normally where it's stored) and that is not touched when you uninstall a program. Microsoft has discontinued the Money program so there's no "current" version. Quicken is the only program of that type still around.
There are many updates and "fixes" for the Office programs (Word is actually part of MS Office). But, it should have installed and after installing then download and install any updates.
Finally if it's just MS Money that you really want, you can do a custom install and only install MS Money. If you want MS Word and the other programs that are in Works (which are just "lite" versions of the full programs) download and install the free "Open Office" suite of programs that are comparable and compatible with MS Office. www.openoffice.org
