Subfolders or subfiles

In "My Documents" I have a document called "Ideas."  I would like to create folders (files?) within the "Ideas" folder.  Would someone be good enough to tell me how to do this?

And while I'm at it, I'm still confused on file/folder terminology.  Is the built-in MS Word folder called "My Documents" a Folder or a File?  If it's a Folder, are all the documents I create and see listed when I open "My Documents"  called "Files" by MS?"

Thank you -- and Happy New Year to all.

Squirrelly,

Open Windows Explorer and click to select My Documents. Now go to File|New|Folder. When you click "Folder" a new folder will appear in the right pane of Explorer with its name highlighted. Type Ideas and click and the subfolder will be established.

To further confuse you My Documents is not a Word folder, it is a Windows folder. In any case, the documents you create in Word with the .doc extension are files, the smallest unit of information on the computer. Files are stored in folders. In nested storage situations which are common one folder can hold several subfolders and/or files, each of which can hold subfolders and/or files.

A "folder" contains files and sub-folders (and a sub-folder would also contain files).

Within the My Documents Folder are many other folders (sub-folders), including the My Pictures,  My Music, etc.

To create a new folder (or sub-folder - whichever you want to call it) withing a Folder.  Using the Windows Explorer, Open the "My Documents" folder, the the Ideas folder, but do not highlight any file.  Then Click on "File" and then "New" and then click "Folder"  It will install another folder in your Ideas folder and will also highlight the folder name so you can change it to anything you wish.

The Windows Help File also details all of this. (Click Start then Click Help).

In general I use the right mouse button to get to the "create folder" functionality, especially with the folders in Outlook.
