A little more information...

How was the original aligned? Left, Right, Full Justified, Center?

What did you change? Left to Right, or Right to Center, etc.

Are there any formatting properties you used in your document, like Heading1, Heading2, etc.?

I guess this is part of the problem: I don't know what you are talking about.

I just opened a blank word document and started typing. The document is a 5 page legal document, with 3 left tabs set. It was saved as a template. I left about 20 blank spaces to be filled in with names, dates, etc.

Filling in the "blanks" has not been a problem.

But, when I decided to change and/or insert a few sentences, or words within a sentence, and re-save it as a "new" template a few of the sentences in completely different paragraphs went out of alignment to the left. When I tried to fix them by inserting more spaces (or lines), more and more lines went out of alignment. They just wouldn't move or re-align and the only way I found to fix them, was to re-type the whole paragraph.

I've been using works for a few year for many spreadsheets, letters and lists. This is the first I tried this type or (legal) document with embedded blanks to be filled in with additional data.

I know it's probably something simple I didn't pickup on, but I've search the Works "help" functions and can't find anything that, remotely, refers to my problem.

Thanks.

OK...

First, let's look at the "template" idea. Are you saving this as a Document Template, or just a Word document. You can choose Document Template when you are at the Save As dialog box by dropping down the Save As Type list. This will save the current document as a .dot file. It can be accessed from the File, New menu in Word. If you're just saving a document, then opening it and making changes, then you are not really using a Word template.

Next, how are you placing your blank spaces? Does the user have to use arrow keys or mouse clicks to select the blank spaces? If so, you may want to look into form fields under help. If you use form fields, you can protect your document, allowing the user to only access the fields where information is to be entered.

Finally, do not use the space bar to justify paragraphs. If you use tabs, make sure you only use tabs. If you insert a space with a tab, Word will try to justify (as you call it, align) the paragraph and it will break.

If you are going to create legal documents, you should visit the Office template web site, available << here >>, to see if there is a template you could use, or learn from. You can also ask any questions on this board, and someone will help.

Thank you so much for all the help.

I did save the document as a template. As you suggested, I will read more about form fields in help. That is a good idea.

I am sure the problem I am having is because I may have, occasional,  used my space bar instead of the tab. Is there a way to fix this, other than retyping the whole document?

I looked at the MS Office template link. That would be great, but I am using Works, not Office. I guess it would almost be worth buying office to ab able to use all those tools.

Thanks again,

I apologize. I thought Works had MS Word as the word processor. I don't think there are form fields in the Works word processor. It would be to your advantage to upgrade to Word. You could purchase the Student Teacher edition of Office 2003 for about $129. It includes Word, Excel, Powerpoint, and Outlook.
