Why do Word documents get saved as Wordpad documents?
I am running Windows 98 on a Dell that came with MS Works and I installed Office 2000. When I use Word, the documents get saved as Wordpad documents and when I click on them they open in Wordpad.
Any help on getting the system to use Word rather than Wordpad would be greatly appreciated.

Make sure you are saving the documents as Word files (extention doc). If they are being saved in that format, it sounds like your file association has been corrupted. Find a *.doc file in Windows Explorer, click to select it, then Shift+right-click and select "Open with" from the context menu. Scroll down and click on Word to select it, then check the box at the bottom of that dialog to tell Windows to always use Word to open that file type.

Denny,
Thanks a lot for your help. I finally got to try it. These files are now opened in Word which solves the main problem, but explorer still identifies them as Wordpad documents. Who knows why. Anyway, thanks again.

Do you mean the icon is wordpad instead of Word? If so, Tools, folder options, File type tab, scroll down to .doc, click advanced, change icon, the path should point to wordicon.exe; use browse to find that file if it doesn't. (or use find in Windows Explorer to locate where that file is on your PC); then you have a choice of Word icons. Repeat if necessary for other Word types (e.g. .dot, dochtml, etc.)

Thanks JRosenfeld,
Yes, what I see in explorer is a Wordpad icon, even though it now opens in Word. It is a minor issue, but makes me think that somewhere, Win98 has decided Wordpad is the default wordprocessor or something like that. I'm going to try your suggestion to see what happens, but if I can't get it to work it will not be a problem. Thanks again!
