Windows Live Mail .. Vista and XP

2 of my new Dell Computers came with Windows Vista installed and they both utilize the Windows Live Mail programs.. I like the live mail program feature of keeping the address book synced on a the 2 Vista computers BUT.. my older Dell computer is using the Outlook Express program and XP and the mail address book is always incorrect.    Is the Windows Live Mail program compatable with the older Dell computer using  using XP (SP2) ?.  It sure would make emailing and address book maintenance much simpler when using the XP machine..

Yes, Windows Live Mail is available to Windows XP and Windows Vista users as a part of the Windows Live Essentials downloads: http://download.live.com/

Thank you.. Can I downlaod and install Windows Live Mail and leave Outlook Express on the computer while I teach my wife the differences and how to use Live mail? I don't want to make her use a program she at first doesn't feel comfortable with?

You definitely can.

Do bear in mind the following though once installed:

  1. Windows Live Mail (WLM) will import all your email accounts and messages from Outlook Express (OE), so if you are using both applications your new messages will be scattered among the two.
  2. WLM does not  support exporting back into OE, so reverting back to OE will be a hassle.

I recommend you configure WLM to leave messages on server (assuming you are using POP3 email access) so OE can download the actual message until you and your spouse are comfortable with the new application.

On the plus side, WLM store messages differently from OE  - each email is a file on your hard drive and so there is no error issue with storage size like with OE (size of hard drive is now the limit), and WLM supports direct Hotmail access now that Microsoft has "turned off" access to those using OE.

Thank you a million for your help and answers.. Now one last question and I should be good to go. I installed Windows Live Mail on the XP computer but the address book is totally different than on the other two computers in my house.  What specific email address/item or setting must be exactly the same as my other two computers already using Live Mail so that the address books will stay synched on all three computers.. Is it the Hotmail address or what... Thankks again for your help.

I use my Hotmail account's address book on all my computers through Windows Live Mail.  This way I have access to the same address book no matter if I am on my own computers or computers at work or in coffee shops or libraries.  You can logon to a particular Hotmail account by a button to the top right hand corner.

I have done as you suggested, but the Live Mail program on the XP computer has a much larger address book than the identical address books on the Vista machines..   I have synched everything and the one is still different.. I can add an address to any computer and it appears on all three... strange to say the least.. any ideas why they are not all the same.. I have logged into my hotmail account on each.. still a difference.. Thanks
