I don't think Works will display Word ".doc" files.
An option is to download the free "open office" suite of programs that are comparable to the Microsoft Office suite that includes MS Word. Do a google search for open office.

I got totally confused reading that Microsoft link that you gave. But, it looks like you have to do many different steps and you really cannot directly import a Word ".doc" file.
Downloading the Open Office suite still looks like the best option if someone does not want to purchase MS Word or a Microsoft suite of products that contains MS Word.
the simplest solution --- especially if you have a very large number of WORD documents --- is that already given by fireberd, to download OpenOffice.
if you can temporarily gain access to WORD on some other machine [say, at a friend's house], and if you have only a few WORD documents, see if you can
convert them(one at a time) to a WORKS-compatible format:
1) open a file with WORD
2) click on FILE, then select SAVE
AS
3) when the file list opens, look at the bottom line, which should say SAVE AS TYPE, and in the box following that, you should see WORD DOCUMENT (*.DOC)
4) click on the drop-down menu there, to see what other file-types are available to you.
For example --- working within WORD
2000 --- I see i can save my file as:
WORKS 3.0 FOR WINDOWS
WORKS 4.0 FOR WINDOWS
WORKS 6.0
WORKS 2000
I'm assuming you were probably using WORD 2003, so you might see a different list of choices. But hopefully, one of them might be compatible with the version of WORKS you have.
And if you don't have the proper WORKS/save option, you still might be able to save/transfer your file using
RICH TEXT FORMAT (*.rtf)
which you can open using
WORDPAD (but NOT notepad).
It might not be able to convert everything into RTF, but whatever you get should still be better than nothing.
you should be able to open, edit, save, and print the word .
doc files
-- OR --
on your XP/word desktop, open up the word .
doc files, one by one, and convert them (per my alternate suggestion) to either a WORKS-compatible .
wps format or a WORDPAD-compatible .
rtf format, then transfer the converted files to your laptop (for example, using a memory stick), and open them on your laptop in WORKS or WORDPAD.
Note: Mary G suggested above Word Viewer 2003 ("View, print and copy Word documents, even if you don't have Word installed" ). The link she gave indicated this is for Windows 2000 Service Pack 4; Windows Server 2003; Windows XP. So unless that information hasn't been updated, I don't know that you can use this on your Vista laptop.
Can't tell whether you are having a file compatibility issue or connectivity issue.
Since you still have access to a copy of Word you might try opening a file in Word, Select File - Save As and save as a Rich Text Format document (RTF).
I have just studied this query/answer session and whilst I am currently downloading the office system recommended I should say that the one by one approach - changing .doc to.rtf works a treat.
