conversion from .wps to .doc?

I work part-time as a computer lab consultant in my school. One of the most frequent problem I encountered is: students created .wps document files at home using Microsoft Works. Then they tried to open them in the school computer lab using Microsoft Word. Sometimes Word opens .wps files successfully, and sometimes not. In the case that Word cannot cannot open .wps files (i.e. Word displays garbage) what can I do to ensure successful conversion everytime?

Have your students save the files as an rtf (Rich Text) file. This should preserve most formatting, and still allow the Word-Works use.

(I don't know if Works has a .doc (Word) item in the Save As list, which would be better)

I have MSWord2002/XP.  I checked the compatible file types (listed when you open a file) and it will support Works for Windows 4.0 (wps), Works 2000 (wps, wpt), Works 6.0 (wps, wpt) and Works for Windows 3.0 (wps).

Check your version of MSWord and see which Works formats are compatible.

Although the .rtf idea isn't bad, sometimes you can't do that. If you'd like a better solution, there is a converter you can install that translates .wps to .doc. Go to the Microsoft Web site and look for the "Works 2000 Converter for Word 97/2000 Users" page. The file name is wp2Krtf.exe. It automatically adds "Works 2000" to your list of possible file conversions when you double-click on the .wps file (choose "Works 2000" from the list. Hopefully, the clickable link to the Microsoft site is below: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=32E7205A-3880-4416-9260-57A96C8A9A76&displaylang=EN
