problem with April's Windows Explorer update can impact Microsoft Office [WORD, Excel, &etc.]

there's indeed a problem with April's Windows  Explorer  update  MS06-015 (908531), for people using either:

Hewlett-Packard's Share-to-Web software [ Namespace Daemon (Hpgs2wnd.exe) ] or

Sunbelt Kerio Personal Firewall

for details, and a "resolution", see here:   http://support.microsoft.com/kb/918165

Thanks for this post -- helped me figure out why my computer was acting so weird.  Evidentially I can't just go into 'uninstall' and uninstall the foolish update?  That would be too easy, wouldn't it.

actually, you CAN "uninstall" this update.   However, be advised that in doing so, you're removing this (so called) "critical" update... meaning that you'll be subject to "attack" by the potential problems that it was trying to protect you against.

Here are directions, assuming you're on an XP system [you may have to modify this for other versions of Windows].

go to your CONTROL PANEL,  ADD/REMOVE programs.   at the top, be sure to CHECK the box marked "SHOW UPDATES".

look down the list for Windows XP Software Updates, and then find
Security Update for Windows XP ( KB908531)
and click on REMOVE

Thank you, thank you!  I certainly appreciate the advice received here -- 'uninstall' did the trick, and my computer seems back to normal.  I'll keep my eyes peeled for that attack I'm no longer protected against.  :smileyhappy:

I believe this problem is more widespread than anyone may yet be aware ...

I don't have any HP equipment or the noted firewall installed on my system, but still experienced multiple problems with all Microsoft Office programs immediately after my computer was rebooted following that "critical" update!

If I used desktop icons to enter any Office program, I then could not open any document from any folder.  However, if I used "My Computer" to access individual files, I could open them, do basic typing or editing functions, and save the file.  But, I could not import graphics from My Pictures, could not do the file/save as function, could not open another document, etc., or the program would lock up.

Tried using "system restore" to fix the glitch, to a number of prior dates / system restore points, and each time I would get an error message that the system could not be restored!

I tried multiple "solutions" recommended by local techs, and via online support, none of which worked.  Also installed various Microsoft downloads that were recommended through their "send error report" pop-ups, when the programs failed.  None worked.

I'm thankful I came across your postings ... the only way to clear this IS to uninstall that update.

Has anyone heard Microsoft own up to this problem yet?  I searched their online postings and found nothing about it!

I am having the same problem and it started after my computer did the windows update on Sunday Night.  I can go online wirelessly but I can not type in a website at the top of the page and have it go forward.  However I can click on a website that I have saved in my favorites or in the internet history page and have the web site connect and navigate through it.  I am also having the problem in Work and Excel.  I can go into the programs and type but when I go to save or open files the computer freezes up.  But if you go to my computer and open the file there it will open with not problem.  So you are saying the only way to fix it is to UNINSTALL the update?  Please help if at all possible.

Manda -- it was the easiest for me to just uninstall the update -- painless.  Did you read the update at the link in the first message?  There's a fix there -- but it's a tad complicated.

Here's another link on the same problem:

A work around for me on the 'not able to use the address bar' problem - I had a friend email me a link to google.  I just googled everywhere I wanted to go -- clicking links was not affected.  I couldn't type www.google.com into my address bar ... but when I clicked the link in the email it was fine.  Once into Google, I managed as I could just click any link without any problems.

The other think that seems s.crewed up in my pc since this 'update' is that I installed an encyclopedia software program -- worked for a day, then pretty much disappeared.  There is no longer a shortcut, it's not listed under 'my programs',  I cannot see it through the normal 'uninstall' in windows -- but I can go into 'run' and browse and find the entire folder with all the installed files there.  I suppose I'll just reinstalled over the old one and hope that it all works out.

Best of luck with this entire mess.

FCOGspf:

Yes, Microsoft has indeed "fessed-up" to this problem.... the first link i supplied above is to Microsoft's official response to the problem:

*************************

additionally, the last link to crn.com cited by wfowfowfo indates that this update also "messed-up" systems running NVIDIA video-drivers prior to version 61.94.

*********************

On April 25th, Microsoft will issue a targeted re-release of the MS06-015 update.
The fix will be available though Microsoft Update or automatically delivered to affected computers through Automatic Update.

again, i must re-iterate that uninstallling this update ---- while it may "fix" the OFFICE/WORD problems you experienced after installing it ---- leaves your system vulnerable to the "critical" problem from which microsoft had hoped to protect you.

Thanks for all your help.  I will have to try some of those fixes, as I can not go without my Word, and Excel until Tuesday.  I will let you know if I succeed at fixing it.

I have had this problem too - nightmare! :-(((

I have used system restore successfully, but windows downloads the updates again when I am not looking. I installed MS Office SP2 but that didn't help.

Instead of uninstalling KB908351, though, I have discovered that using windows explorer to open files - right clicking a lot - and using the keyboard shortcut keys has enabled me to work with word files - but only after 8 1/2 hours of struggle looking for answers. I know there is a solution to edit the registry subkey but I've posted a query elsewhere on the forum about the exact format of this (like the crucial use of the space bar) and am still waiting for an answer - so in the meantime, I've got the rogue update supposedly protecting my computer (hopefully) and I've managed to do a bit of work in word. A compromise?

you wrote:   " windows downloads the updates again when I am not looking"... that's because you (probably) have AUTOMATIC UPDATES turned on.   Since you've found a "compromise", i guess you can live with this for a while... keep in mind that an official fix (from microsoft) is expected in the next few days.

but if you have problems (and choose not to follow their "registry"/edit fix), you can [temporarily] turn off the automatic updates, then (either do the system restore again, or) uninstall the update.

I have fixed my problem for now.  I restored my computer to a previous date before the update installed.  To hopefully prevent the problem from returning, I have switched my automatic updates settings.  I have changed it from the automatic update to download updates for me, but let me choose when to install them.  As for the SP2 update, I think that is what caused my problem.  As for now I will leave my update uninstalled and hope my virus protection and firewall keep anything bad out.  I will hopefully install the updated update on Tuesday when it comes out.  This has been a nightmare also, I took 4 days on the forum to even figure out what was wrong with the computer.

the microsoft "patch" (fixed update) has (allegedly) been released:

anyone who uses it, please  let us know if things are better now....

"For customers who have already applied the update and are experiencing the problem related to the older Hewlett Packard Share-to-Web software, or older NVIDIA drivers prior to or including version 61.94, the revised update will be available through Windows Update and Microsoft Update. The targeted re-release will be automatically delivered to affected computers through Automatic Update if it has been enabled. The re-release will not be distributed to non-affected computers.... Customers who have already applied the MS06-015 update who are not experiencing problems need take no action....

During installation, the revised security update will place the following entries in the allow list:

HP Share-to-Web

• {A4DF5659-0801-4A60-9607-1C48695EFDA9}

NVIDIA Graphics Driver

• {1E9B04FB-F9E5-4718-997B-B8DA88302A47}

• {1E9B04FB-F9E5-4718-997B-B8DA88302A48}

• {1CDB2949-8F65-4355-8456-263E7C208A5D}

Windows downloaded two updates on my computer today at about 1800 GMT (UK) and I am pleased to report that things are better now - as far as opening and saving files in Word goes at least. I haven't tried other applications yet but I am already less stressed....
