2400MP and resolution settings

Question

I have a 2400MP, set at all the defaults (I just got it). I run it from a Dell Inspiron 6900 which normally has the screen resolution set at 1680 by 1050. When I connect the projector and it eventually detects the signal, the resolution on the computer changes down to 1024 by 768 and I can't see the whole desktop on the computer, and what I can see on the computer is in only a small section of the laptop monitor. Is there some way to set this so I can see the whole desktop on both the projector and the monitor?

The 2400 has a resolution max of 1024x768.  So it will always resize if a lappy has a higher default resolution.  It should actually shrink the desktop as well.   A follow up question is:  If you are playing a DVD, and the lappy only uses 50% of the screen space, is it possible to get the projector to fill up the screen?

Yes, when I play a DVD the projector does fill up the screen, as it does when displaying anything else. It's only the laptop screen/desktop that resizes down.
