Dell 1800 Projector no signal message

HI...I have picked up a Dell 1800 projector and trying to connect to my new HP Elitebook via VGA to  HDMI cable.

The only message I am getting when I  try and connect is the projector saying 'Searching for signal'.  Is there anything I need to do to get a signal from the laptop?
