Dell PowerEdge R540 - Unknown USB Device (Link in Compliance Mode)

Hi all,
I installed today a Dell PowerEdge R540 server.
I installed Windows Server 2016 DataCenter edition, after that I executed SUU software to upgrade drivers and firmware.

In this moment, I noted this warning inside Device Manager (Win+R > devmgmt.msc)

FedericoCoppola97_0-1643989164763.png

I tried two times to uninstall and reinstall this USB device, but nothing changed.
I don't have any driver and firmware upgrade available.

There aren't any USB devices connected to this physical server, but the issue persist.

What can I do?

Thanks a lot
Federico

Just guessing.... the iDRAC Service Module. Try to install the Module within your GuestOS or disable it within the iDRAC.

FedericoCoppola97,

What I would suggest is to verify that Windows itself is updated and then use the article here to help identify the device, and then update it's driver.

Let us know what you see and how it goes.

Hi,

>> Windows itself is updated
Yes it is updated

>> Then use the article here to help identify the device, and then update it's driver.
Hi, I tried to follow suggested article, but it did not help me.

The message error in my case is:

Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems. (Code 43)
The SuperSpeed link to the USB device keeps going to an error state Compliance.
If the device is removable, remove the device and then disable/enable
from device manager to recover.

Hardware Ids in my case is:
USB\PORT_LINK_COMPLIANCE_MODE

Thanks for your help!
Federico

Hi,

iDRAC Service Module wasn't installed on my Windows Server 2016 DataCenter Guest OS.

FedericoCoppola97_0-1644058825577.png

I installed it and service is running on Guest OS at the moment.

Anyway the issue persist.

Inside Windows Device manager I still see "warning" about "Unknown USB Device"

FedericoCoppola97_3-1644058984670.png

FedericoCoppola97_4-1644059806187.png

I already tried to uninstall/re-install this USB device after iDRAC Service Module deploy.

Finally, I used this ISO to upgrade driver and firmware:

Is it right?

Thanks

Hardware IDs that I get is:

Hardware Ids in my case is only: USB\PORT_LINK_COMPLIANCE_MODE

In Hardware IDs there isn't any PCI identification code.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

It could be an issue at OS level, is Windows 2016 an OEM version bought with the server?

I cannot exclude an hardware issue, if all drivers/firmware are up to date. Do you know if this issue was present in a previous OS installation?

Thanks

Hello,

I did some internal search and found out that this issue can be solved with a BIOS upgrade.

Which BIOS version is installed?

Thanks

Marco

Hi @DELL-Young E

FedericoCoppola97_0-1644223654670.png

I downloaded Intel C62x/C240 Series Chipset Drivers.

Installation of this driver doesn't solve my trouble.

I already installed this driver using SUU ISO.

Anyway I overwrite this driver just to be sure, after installation I rebooted server R540.
Then I checked again in "Device Manager" but I always get the same warning message.

This is my situation after driver installation:

I can add this details:

CM_DEVCAP_RAWDEVICEOK

Device stack:
\Driver\ACPI
\Driver\USBHUB3

Location information:

Logs:

Outranked Drivers: usb.inf:USB\PORT_LINK_COMPLIANCE_MODE:00FF2000

Can this trouble be generated by motherboad malfunction?
Thanks a lot for your help!

Sorry I didn't express myself clearly.

Is the Windows 2016 Data Center edition an OEM version or a retail version?

And the other question, the issue was present also before reinstalling the OS?

Thanks

Marco

Hi all,
Today I downloaded "DELL EMC Driver Pack For Windows OS, v.21.12.00" from official Dell support page.
Link here: https://dl.dell.com/FOLDER08022353M/1/LCDRVPCK_WIN_21.12.200.488.ISO

After that I copied files from ISO to USB stick (FAT32 USB drive).
I executed driver installation via Local Repository using LifeCycle Controller.

I rebooted server many times and now it seems to be fine!

FedericoCoppola97_1-1644233163972.png

After this trouble I have this question:
I downloaded and exected many times "DELL EMC Server Update Utility" instead of "DELL EMC Driver Pack For Windows OS" for these two reasons:

1) Description is the same

2) DELL EMC Server Update Utility file size is bigger than DELL EMC Driver Pack For Windows OS, so you can think that this file has got more driver and solve your issue

FedericoCoppola97_0-1644232369313.png

When should I choose the first file o the second file?

Thanks so much for your help!
Federico

Dear Marco,

>> Windows 2016 an OEM version bought with the server
I installed Windows 2016 DataCenter edition manually.

>> Do you know if this issue was present in a previous OS installation
During Windows Server 2016 installation, I just load manually RAID driver.

Thanks for your support!
