Kernel leapfrog?

I updated my packages this morning (which included a new linux kernel) this morning, and the brightness controls no longer worked (the indicator appears, but the screen brightness doesn't actually change).

My working theory is that Canonical published a new Kernel (apparently not supporting adjusting screen brightness on the XPS13), which because it was a higher version than the one in the sputnik-kernel PPA, was installed over the Dell-blessed kernel. I can see on Launchpad, that Dell's version of the kernel is currently building and will be available soon.

Is there a way I can stop the two available kernels from doing this "leap-frog" thing? It seems like the solution may have something to do with apt_preferences.

If there is, Dell may want to consider baking it into future versions of the image.

I think this thread describes the same issue: en.community.dell.com/.../19472057.aspx

I also have a problem with brightness that could be related to what you posted...

I have a brand new dell xps 13 (L321X). I installed ubuntu 12.10. Did all the upgrade and then added the sputnik ppa.

Now my kernel is: (uname -a)

Linux 3.5.0-19-generic #30+kamal11~DellXPS-Ubuntu SMP

and my bios is: (dmidecode -s bios-version) A06

I followed various solutions found in ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php but none is functioning...

Does someone has found a workaround to this issue?

Everything else is working very well.
