Blu-Ray won't play on PowerDVD DX
I just got a studio XPS 8000 with a BH20N Blu-ray writer. It came with PowerDVD DX. When I insert a Blu-ray movie, PowerDVD gives an error message: incorrect or unsupported format.
I went to the Cyberlink website and found out that PowerDVD DX only plays back DVDs not Blu-rays. The Ultra version, however, plays Blu-ray. I downloaded the 30 day trial of PowerDVD Ultra 9 from the website and now all my Blu-ray movies play fine.
I then called Dell support and asked them to send me a PowerDVD Ultra 8 or 9 disc. They said all they have is the DX version and that is what they bundle with their Blu-ray drives.
Some people in the forums seem to be able play Blu-ray with the DX version. Anybody else have the same problem? Any solutions?
Thanks.

It doesn't work with the latest Netflix's blu-ray rental, such as The Book of Eli with Denzel Washington. I'm running PowerDVD DX8.3.1.6107, which is bundled with my new Inspiron that I bought on Black Friday. The "Online Update" is grey'ed out and won't let you upgrade. Does anyone have the latest patches??? It is very frustrating.

I had the same situation - in my case a new Studio XPS 7100 W7/64 bit running PowerDvd DX 8.3.1.6107. I added an aftermarket LG BluRay drive and the Dell PowerDvd DX would not recognize any BluRay. I got the 'no disc drive or your disk drive does not support the format of the inserted disk' message. It would recognize and play regular DVDs without an issue.
As mentioned above go back to the message from last Feb. that has the tinyurl link in it. Do the following:
- Download the file from the link.
- Uninstall the current PowerDVD DX version. It lets lots of files laying about, but the uninstall completes normally
- Install the PowerDvd DX version you downloaded from the link (8.0.3228).
- Start up the media center and select PowerDvd. You should immediately be redirected to load a critical update.
- Download and install the update. You will be back at version 8.3.1.6107, but when you bring up the media center and startup PowerDvd the logo will say BluRay .
- You are in. BluRays will now play. The only strange thing is you must use the arrow and enter keys to select menu items from the BD. Once the BD is playing you can use the mouse to control the video playback. Also, you will see a message telling you the colors have been changed to W7 Basic - that's OK.
- One last thought. After all this, if some of the newer BDs still won't play properly try downloading the free trial of Slysoft .com AnyDVDHD. It places itself between the BD drive and PowerDvd DX and will eliminate the so called protection encoding and the BD should play.

Hi, I have laptop Dell Studio XPS 1640, upgraded from Windows Vista to Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit and i have Blu-Ray Combo drive (DVDRWBD CA10N ATA).
The drive played a Blu-Ray Avatar Disc (the only Blu-Ray disc I own yet! :) ) fine using Power Dvd DX which was pre-installed (no mouse support on movie menues/trackpad etc.) Recently I tried to play the same Blu-Ray disc and I got message to update Power DVD but I had no internet so I couldn't and couldn't play movie. When I had internet access later on I wanted to update but the option was disabled so I did system restore point, started Power DVD and did the update, but still couldn't play the Blu-Ray Avatar...So, i updated driver for DVDRWBD CA10N ATA from dell website, which I had done before aswell. I also managed to find Power DVD software version from MY Dell Downloads online, so I uninstalled and installed from new file Cyberlink Power DVD DX 8_3 (BD Version) but I got warning sign that Blu-Ray cannot be played and update is required, so I did the update and was back to where I had started Power DVD DX version 8.3.1.6107 which won't play the Blu-Ray disc.
So, I decided to ring Dell as I never had a reinstall disc as Dell never sent me one with laptop for Power DVD.
The Dell Tech did share screen and did reinstall of driver DVDRWBD CA10N ATA, did something with registry, used the files for Power DVD that I had from My Dell Downloads, rebooted system, tried to play Blu-Ray using DivX Plus Player and VLC Media Player for some reason, lol....did everything again and again, and reached conclusion that I need a new drive but before they give me new drive I have to do reinstall operating system. lol I asked if he was sure that doing that would solve the problem and is there no other solution. I told him that it could be cyberlink Power DVD version which is the problem as I had read some of forums related to that, so he tried a trial of Power DVD 10 which could play the Blu-Ray disc, so he said I can use the trial and wait till a patch to version 8.3.1.6107 is available as he has mentioned the issue to the supervisor who will look into it.... Then I asked him if he has any idea when the patch will be available and he said he is going to send me version 9.5 disc, for which he 'confirmed the dispatch' while I was on the line and after 2 days today I have the disc.. After installing I played the Blu-Ray disc on Power DVD 9.5 via Windows Media Center and it worked but there was no option of updating the software. Then I started Power DVD directly and got message to update, did that and Blu-Ray disc still works (no mouse/trackpad support on movie menues etc.).
It was 2.5 hours call with Dell but It was... worth it I think, I just hope it keeps working now and doesn't die again after sometime. Thanks Dell.. :D :D
Ask Dell for version 9.5 as that seems to be the solution and you can confirm that for your system by running a trial of version 9.5 or 10 so you don't have to waste time on the line for ages, and reinstall OS unless there is a desire for a new drive....lol....wonder how much that costs Dell compared to software version 9.5....Anyway I am still under warranty....!!

PowerDVD DX on my Dell Studio system recently quit working. When I ran it it said I needed an update and when the update installer ran, it died every time. I was able to uninstall the program but could not install any version.
The problem turned out to be that LogMeIn was also installed on the machine, and the "mirror" display driver that it installed was interfering. Removing LogMeIn completely solved the problem. I removed the "mirror driver" using Device Manager because it was still there after removing LogMeIn.

Hi Skorpian,
Thanks for the update. Seems like it would be worthwhile to try the trial version, then beg Dell to send you this disc.

Hi, everyone!
I have a XPS 8100 (Win7 64bits) with HL-DT-ST DVDRWBD CH20N (firmware A101) and I can't play any Blu-Ray disc with the pre-installed PowerDVD DX 8.3.1.6107. I think the version Dell installed on my computer was the DVD only, so I've tried to install the version mr. TABLARLU posted here and I've got the same error I got when I've tried the PowerDVD DX 8_3 BD Version from dell's website https://smartsource.dell.com/web/main.aspx (VERY VERY OLD, by the way: 09/25/2009):
Error Code: -5011 : 0x80040707
Error Information:
>SetupDLL\SetupDLL.cpp (472)
pAPP:PowerDVD
PVENDOR:My Company Name
PGUID:6811caa0-bf12-11d4-9ea1-0050bae317e1
$11.0.0.28844
@Windows XP Service Pack 1 (7601) BT_OTHER 0.0
Does anyone knows another link for the PowerDVD DX BD version?

I too bought an xps 8100 left it in the box for a year. i just tried to play a blue ray saturday night. it won't see the bluray disk says not formatted just like you. dumbies at dell should know this is a problem by now. there arab tech support decided it was a hardware issue. I had a feeling the software would not support blu ray. thbis is insane how can i be smarter than a computer company and there hired tech suport. they sent a man to my house today he relaced the bluray drive and the same problem still persists. i did this search and found your story. It confirms my initial thoughts. the tech people at dell insisted that the problem is not software related. I am upset now wasted three days. I will make them give me a copy of power DVD 12. Thanks Gus C

I recently had to replace my Studio XPS 8100 hard drive (Windows 7 Home Premium), after experiencing both 0142 and 0146 errors. One of the final obstacles I encountered while tidying up all of my re-installs was this Blu-Ray problem, which I did not have previously.
Tablarlu's fix, which was posted Feb. 20, 2010 worked for me. The tinyurl file that he mentions (http://tinyurl.com/9a5jot) will:
1. Download PowerDVD version 8.1 to your computer.
2. After it's installed, open the program and you will be directed to upgrade the software through the CyberLink website. Follow the link and prompts and you will end up with version 8.3.????.
3. After that, the final step is to run one last patch. For this, you will be prompted again upon opening the program and taken to the PowerDVD download page at the CyberLink website. I first tried to "run" the patch from the website, but it did not work. I then "saved" the file to my download folder and ran it from there.
PowerDVD ver. 8.3.1.7501 is now the version on my computer and it's working just fine.
Thanks for posting tablarlu!

PowerDVD Ultra 12 could play blu-ray disc, i think it is expensive, i just use UFUSoft Blu-ray Player, which can be used for playing Blu-ray and video files on Windows 8/7/Vista/XP, can help users enjoy any Blu-ray disc, Blu-ray folder, ISO files and popular video files at home.
