Blue Screen on booting with stop message. Error Codes 0F00:0244 + 0F00:1A44

Question

Hi.....big, big problem. On booting my Dimenion 4550, I got the message blue screen "STOP:C0000218"{D faillance d'un fichier du Registre}\System Root\System 32\Config\Software (must add that my system is in French!!). I went through all of the DELL support doing what they say and finally at the symptom tree got

IDE Disk-Read test Error code 0F00:0244 Msg: Block 84011899, 106921245, 114001165 and idem for IDE Verify test 0F00:0244 Msg....

I've been on internet to search for the problem and it seems I'm a bit in the s......, will have to buy a new Hard-disk and loose all of my data on the PC (yes, like an idiot, I've got no backup)

Got any suggestions for how I can deal with this. I'm not too hot on doing a restore to manufacturing settings and can't get into the restore feature anyway (I've got no CD) as DELLS way of doing it (CTRL + F11 with the 1st DELL screen doesn't work!

Help me please!!

I'm going a little mad and heavily frustrated!

There's a good chance you will be able to get some or all of your data. You will need to replace the drive (you need a 3.5" desktop parallel ATA -- NOT SATA -- drive. Reload Windows and attach the dying drive as a secondary. You should be able to read at least some of your data.

Hi! Thanks for your quick reply. So this means I do need to buy a new drive or can just a card be changed? It would probably be better to get the whole tower, no? Our little Dimension 4550 already dates from 1993 and doesn't even have a USB plug in! I could see with an computer friend to see if he can recuperate the data, as you have said. Thanks! I'll give him your message and I'll tell you about it later!

That is certainly old for a computer, you would be much better off with a newer system and again attaching your old drive for a few minutes to recover documents and other data is certainly a possibility via USB adaptors or via the internal cabling if the new computer is compatible with the PATA drive that you probably have.

Most new systems come with SATA ports and some with SATA and IDE ports. You will need one IDE connector and power to temporarily mount your old drive.

Hi again....yep, as I thought....at least it will take priority over buying a new HD TV for the family men for the upcoming future UEFA soccer cup here in Europe!!
