Boot to USB or eSata attached drive

Hi, I'd like to know whether anyone has successfully attached a slave HDD to their laptop (i have the studio 1569) to be able to install Win7 on it.  When i boot the machine and select to boot from USB, it says the device cant be found, it looks to be because there's no power coming to the device.  Once i'm in Windows, i can use the device as a slave drive and copy files ok so it seems only to be an issue with boot-up.

Anyone got any ideas?

Hi PeteAds,

Not all external drives are bootable by all systems. Try a bootable flash drive. If you don't have one, there are plenty of tutorials on how to prepare one. It doesn't need to be especially large.
