CD ROM Drive issues after Win 7 upgrade ... a few additions and corrections

Question

Like the person who posted above, I too have recently upgraded to Win 7 and am having trouble getting both of my CD ROM drives to work. I have this as the D drive:

HL-DT-ST DVD+-RW GSA-H73N SCSI CdRom Device

... and this as the E drive:

PBDS CDRWDVD DH-48C2S SCSI CdRom Device

Both D and E will boot a disk like Office.

I have reinstalled Roxio Creator. I tried to duplicate a disk. I have disks that worked in either or both drives before I upgraded. I couldn't get it to copy a disk from D to E or E to D, no matter which blank disk I tried in either drive. I then tried to see if either one would create a disk from files, and at this point, I have photos going to Disk E, using the Win 7 program, not Roxio. As I was writing this, the first disk completed and now I have files going to another DVD +R disk using Roxio.

I have looked for updated drivers or firmware, but haven't seen any that seem specific to my drives. Device manager says they are working properly and have the most updated driver, but the drivers are 3 years old. I'm not even sure who the manufacturer is of these drives, as I can't glean much from the name of the drive. Can someone give me some guidance?

It appears the E drive is working OK, but the D drive isn't recognizing ANY blank media I provide. And although the E drive will write files I provide through Roxio, it won't duplicate a disk in the D drive.

Any thoughts? Thanks!

OK, I just checked the Roxio site, my version of the software is not compatible with Win7. I had a Dell Edition. Anyone have any thoughts on the best software to facilitate copying a disk from one drive to the next?

My suggestion would be to do some homework and buy a full package for disc burning. However, in Osprey's Toolbox (link below), I have a link to ImgBurn, a free CD/DVD burning utility. This program works well but is limited to simple tasks. It does not do DVD encoding, for example.

I personally use an older version of Nero. You could also give the full version a one month free trial. Link also in the toolbox.

I just downloaded ImgBurn. It doesn't appear that it will copy a DVD or CD, although it seems usable enough for simple stuff.  I had Roxio Creator before, and I am not opposed to buying something. Any thoughts? Do you like Nero?

I've never used it myself, so I'll leave it to Osprey to confirm it... but I'd be VERY surprised if it can't copy discs?

Anyways... here are a few more FREE CD/DVD programs you might like to try, before considering buying a retail product:

CD Burner XP (highly recommended! And despite the name, it works under Vista and Windows 7)
ImgBurn (also very good - which is why Osprey provides a link for it)
Deep Burner
Final Burner FREE
Ultimate CD/DVD Burner
Totally Free Burner

Re Nero: Although the full program contains stuff many don't/won't use, it's still a very popular program - if not the most popular :emotion-55:

But there's a cut-down version of it available, for anyone who just require a program for basic copying/burning.

Not only is it a cut-down version though... it's also completely FREE... forever :emotion-11:

I'm talking about Nero 9 Lite :emotion-21:

It includes the 'Ask' toolbar, but I believe the option to install it can be disabled - via a tick-box?

Yes, ImgBurn can definitely copy discs.
