CD/RW is no longer on my computer

We have had our Dimension 4600 for 3 years and have made countless CDs. Went to make one the other day and CD burner would not work. I know the CD/DVD player was on the D drive and the burner was on the E drive. We no longer have the E drive and the CD/RW is not listed in device manager. Any help will be appreciated.

Try deleting the upper and lower filters, following these instructions. You might need to reinstall your burner software after doing this.

Try deleting both drives and the secondary IDE controller in device manager and reboot.

If the DVD-ROM drive re-appears but not your CD-RW, then the next step is to run the drive diagnostic. Reboot and when you see the blue Dell logo, hit F12 to enter the diagnostics. You need a data CD-ROM disc in the drive to run the test.

Thanks for your response. I did everything it said to do and received this message.

The upper and lower filter registry values that can cause cd access problems do not exist on this computer. Any other thoughts.

Thanks again

I don't want to sound dumb but I want to be sure I do this correct. Only the CD/DVD ROM actually shows up on the system info. Am I to UNINSTALL this?? Then I have 2 Primary IDE Channels, 2 Secondary IDE Channels and 2 Standard Dual Channel PCI IDE Controllers. Am I UNINSTALLING the 2 Secondary IDE Channels?? I'm sorry to be such an idiot and thanks for all your help.

So you have two controllers and two primary and secondary channels? Well, that might be part of the problem. Do all of them appear to be operating properly? No exclamation points or any other errors?

Ok, delete the drive that's there and both secondary IDE channels and reboot.

Sorry, the CD/DVD ROM and the 2 Secondary IDE Channels. I uninstalled all three things and they all reinstalled when I rebooted.

Ok, I'm out of ideas except to run the Dell diagnostics on the drive (F12 on startup to get to the utility partition). You need a data CD-ROM disc in the drive to do this.
