Can't format my C: drive -- Windows Running

Please help!  I'm running ME and have been trying to reformat my C: drive.  After I type format or go to the link to format the drive, I get an error telling me it cannot format the drive because a Windows program is currently running.  No program is running!

I tried to upgrade to XP over it, but it didn't erase the ME and then I had even worse problems with two operating systems.

Any help or suggestions is GREATLY appreciated!

Uhh, you can't format the c: drive from within Windows.  If you are going to load ME, W2k, or XP just boot to that cd and repartition, reformat, and load windows.

Thanks!  I tried to upgrade to XP, but it didn't erase my ME -- then I had two operating systems going.

I forgot to mention that I've got some type of systems error going on my computer -- it won't even run windows right now -- every 30 seconds or so, I've got an error that says Explorer has encountered an error and will now close (this happens with any Windows program is running.)

Any more suggestions?

Paulwe,

Thank you for using Dell's Community Forum.

I would try booting to your original operating system (the one that came with the system) and then formatting the HDD outside of windows. Once that’s done, install the original OS, and then once you have a clean install, install the upgrade operating system.

Hi Cory:

Thanks for the follow up.  Unfortunately after going through the entire process of booting up my ME disk, I'm getting the same error -- any Windows program I try to run shuts down immediately when I try to use it.  I get a pop-up error that says Windows has discovered an error in .......(the message varies to say Windows or Explorer, and the error is in different places.)

I've now tried to reboot/reformat the C: three times to no avail!

Help!

Thanks

Paul

If you are willing to start over with the hdd, I'd highly suggest you get W2k or even XP.  Me had a lot of stability problems in the notebook realm, and you might even have a virus.

I bought a Dell with ME in 2001 (they wouldn't sell me Windows 2000) at it was a nightmare.  My advice, ME was a dog; screen lock-ups, print problems, yopu name it.  Get ride og ME and load in XP on a clean hard drive.  Life will be good. I did it last year and no problems on my 1.3 256 Ram.  Good luck
