Can't get InCD (Nero) to work on my system

Hello,

I'm having a bear of a time trying to get my system to be able to write to CD-RW discs. At work I use WinXP with InCD from Nero and I really like Nero products, so when I bought my new Dimension E510 system, I tried to install Nero 6 Ultra Edition which includes InCD packet writing software. Everything appears to install just fine, and I even get the little yellow InCD icon in the taskbar, but unlike my work computer, it never changes to the green checkmark icon when a CD-RW disc is inserted into the drive. From searching these boards and reading about many similar problems, I'm guessing it has to be a driver conflict with the preinstalled Sonic software that was on this Dell system when it arrived. I have uninstalled most of the Sonic programs which I thought may have interfered, but to no avail. I also have updated all the Nero drivers so they are current as of 10/23/05.

Using the Add/Remove Programs option from the control panel, here are programs remaining on my system which *may* still complicate things, all the other Sonic stuff has been uninstalled:

DAO 3.5
Dell Media Experience
Power DVD 5.5

My CDRW/DVD player is a TSSTcorp CDRW/DVD  TSH492B

Any help would be appreciated.

Hi ChemSteve,

I would suggest you start fresh, use Nero`s Clean Tool to completely remove all of Nero.
You should be able to find this on Nero`s site or I believe I have it in Section 7-5 of the CD/RW link in my post. Next, same CD/RW link, completely remove Sonic per instructions found in Section 13-0, article 24.
I would then, just to be safe, clear the filters, same CD/RW link, Section 12, article 10. I know the article mentions Roxio but we have seen it with many burning programs.
Then install your Nero software, this should give you the clean / fresh install.

Best Regards

God, grant me the senility to forget the people I never liked anyway,
the good fortune to run into the ones I do
and the eyesight to tell the difference.

Predator,

Still not working. I used Nero's General Clean Tool to clean all Nero apps off. Read your article regarding completely removing all the Sonic stuff and would have followed the directions but everything the directions said to remove was gone anyway, so that was fine. Then cleared the filters - didn't have any upper filters but did delete a lower filter. Rebooted and installed my Nero 6 Ultra Edition, then installed all the current updates for it. Rebooted & crossed fingers. Unfortunately still getting the exact same behavior. The drive and disc both show up but the disc is treated like a CD-R and cannot be written to.

Question: when I click on the device details for my CDRW/DVD drive, should the checkbox for enabling recording be checked or not? I don't want to get my hopes up because I think I've tried both conditions after all the steps above and still have the same problem, but I would like to know.

Any other ideas? I think you guys are more knowledgeable than the average Dell support chat rep I may get online...are there any firmware updates for this type of drive? By the way, what type of drive do I have? I've never heard of TSST, are they just a bargain basement supplier for Dell or what?

Thanks,

Steve

Chemsteve:

Yes, enable CD recording should be checked, but I don't think that will help. I believe it's only used for the XP CD writing wizard. Are you formatting the discs? I'm not familiar with InCD specifically, although I personally avoid packet-writing programs. But there's no reason it shouldn't work.

The discs I have tried so far have all been CD-RWs pre-formatted by InCD with either my WinXP system at work or my old Win98SE system which my new Dell system replaced. I have not tried formatting a CD-RW disc yet with my new Dell system - I will try that tonight when I get home and see if that helps.

Hey, so my problem seems fixed, sort of. After formatting a CD-RW disc in my computer last night, that disc works fine and is writable as it should be. That's good, but I really wish I could figure out why it won't read other CD-RWs formatted with InCD, that's kind of the whole point in sharing data between my home & work computers. I guess I'll just have to make sure and format discs at home. Also, I know there's a new updated version of Nero (ver. 7) coming out soon which I can download and that may fix some of the glitches.

Predator and Osprey, thanks a lot for your help! I appreciate it!
