Converting FAT 32 dives to NTFS

I am following the KB article on how to convert FAT 32 file systems to NTFS. When I type in 'convert D /FS:NTFS'  and enter cmd then asks me to enter the current volume label for drive D:. Where do I find the volume label? I have 2 hard drives and one is partitioned  and one is not. Both disks and paritions are currently FAT 32. I want to convert them to NTFS.

Hi,

Volume label is the name assigned to a formated disk.

Click on My Computer and note the name shown for th ehard disk or hard disk partition you are looking to convert.

Alternatively

Using a bootable floppy disk or by pressing F8 on boot and selecting "Command Prompt Only"

Boot to a DOS prompt and type FDISK then choose option 4 and display the volume label of the partition(s)

Hi back, Cari

Thank you for your reply.

I opened My Computer and found Hard Disk Drives listed as follows:

DISK1_VOL1 (C:)

DISK2_VOL1 (D:)

DISK2_VOL2 (E:)

After I enter KB instructions "convert D: /FS:NTFS' command, I get ' Enter the correct volume label for drive D:' When I enter the volume label as it is listed ' DISK2_VOL1 (D:)'  I get 'An incorrect volume label was entered for this drive' I have tried serveral combinations of the label wording and I get the same message, 'An incorrect volume label was entered for this drive'  Any ideas?

HI,

In My Computer

Select a drive

Right click on it and then select Properties

The name of the drive is given in the white box towards the top of the screen.

If you have not specifically named the drives or partitions, then this may be the issue. Unless the drive is named the convert routine may not be able to pick it up.

You could rename the drives to something very easy to remember such as drive c / drive d / drive e.

I have always used Partition Magic for this sort of thing.

Cari

Figured it out. I excluded (duh) the "(D:)" from the volume label as listed in My Computer and I converted both DISKS and 3 volumes tp NTFS from FAT 32 successfully. I can't remember why I used FAT 32 in the first place when my Dell factory hard drive crashed permanently and Dell was kind enough to replace it under warranty. I added a second hard drive for backup at that time in case it ever happen again. I lost everything on the 9 month old factory (Western Digital hard drive). Thanks again for your help.
