Copied CD plays on PC but not on CD player

I have a Dimension 2400 with a Sony CD-RW CRX216E.  I have tried copying CD's using both Sonic Record Now and RealOne Player s/w.  I have used CD's that have already been copied so I know there is not a copyright protection issue.  Each time I get a message that the burn was successful and I can play the burned CD on my PC.  However, I cannot play it on other CD players.

What he said...

ALSO.... did you copy the cd using "disk at once" ?   if you didn't then there's a good chance it was copied "file by file" which DOESN'T work well with normal run-o-the-mill CD players, in stereos, cars etc.

If you made an "MP3" CD instead of a standard "CDDA" audio CD that could be the reason.  Also, the CD burn speed can be an issue with many audio CD players (limit your CD burn speed to 12X or less and see if that helps, if the burn speed is an issue).

Thanks  for your response.  The Sonic RecordNow s/w did not provide options for speed or type of copy so I assume it was a CD file not MP3.  Could it be a hardware problem?

I am sure you do not have a hardware problem.  It is likely a speed
problem.  I think the Sony CD-RW CRX216E is a 48x burner.  As a "rule
of thumb", it is recommended to burn an audio CD at one-forth the
maximum speed; which equals 12x as fireberd suggested.  I am not
familiar with Sonic Record Now, but somewhere in the software there
is the capability to control the burn speed.

As you suggested, I changed the speed to 12X and I also tried playing it on a new SONY radio CD-R/RW player.  It started to play a few notes, then I heard some clicking sounds and then it stopped.  On my PC, the burned CD plays perfectly.  Do you have any other suggestions?  Thanks, Ken

The basic "rule ot thumb" for that player has failed.  The only other thing
to do is to further reduce the burn speed until you find at what burn speed
that player will be compatable with.  It is trial and error.  Try perhaps
4x and if that works, go up from there.  The fact that the disc plays fine
on the computer says you burner is working.

I have two CDRW drives.  One of them can burn an audio CD at 16x and will
play in all of our players.  My other CDRW drive has to burn the CDs at 4x
to be compatable with the same players and that burner actually has to burn
at 1x to be playable in one of those players.  You are running into what was
a common problem in the early days of CD burning.

I call it the "Triangle of Compatability":  1) Player, 2) Burner, 3) Burn Speed.
Once you find what works, it works until you alter one of the above three items.
The only variable in the Triangle is the burn speed.  So, if for example, a
different player is used, the variable is burn speed which may go up or down.

Thanks for your response.  However, I reduced the speed to 4X which was the lowest speed option provided by the Sonic RecordNow s/w.  This time it did not work on either my new CD player or my PC.  This is incredibly frustrating since this is the first time I have ever had a CD burner.  My PC is only 3 months old and my CD player is brand new.  I shouldn't  be experiencing problems from the early days of CD burners.  I only bought the Sonic RecordNow s/w with my new PC because DELL recommended it on its website.  It seems like it should work without all this trouble.

That is very puzzling what you are experiencing.  It is certainly not
normal or usual.  I am not a Sonic RecordNow user so I can not comment.
However, the slower burn speed should have solved a normal situation.
Perhaps the drive is failing.  The only suggestion I have is to contact
Dell by telephone and ask for a replacement drive.

Thanks again for your response.  I have also tried calling and emailing DELL and it is impossible to get them to do anything than tell me it must be a software problem and they are not responsible.  Although, apparently, in the first 30 days after I received my PC they would have given support to any software I bought with the PC.  I didn't get around to trying my CD burner because it took me a while just to buy the blank CD-R's.
