Do you have Roxio 5, Sonic DLA, or Nero Showtime on your system? 

By the way, one way I'm sure to avoid this is to disable all autoplay options for all disc types. Change all of them to "take no action".

I do have Nero Showtime, as well as Pinnacle Studio on my system? How might this cause the problem, especially since NShowtime & Pinnacle are not new additions.

To change auto play option(s), should I go into each of these programs or is there a way to disable via a "universal" action?

Here are instructions to set autoplay options in XP. Again, I suggest you set all media types to "take no action".

After you do that, try inserting a DVD and then start Showtime manually.

I looked up which applications cause this error on disc insertion and those were three that came up.

Good news, bad news. I was able to disable AutoPlay for all media software...and I was able to put a DVD into the D-drive & use Nero Showtime to play a disc. Then I removed the DVD & inserted a different DVD into the drive, and the system crashed as per my initial problem above. Through trial & error, it seems that I must restart computer (I assume this 'clears' memory storage) to play another disk. I have not yet tried to create/burn a DVD as I have done on several occasions prior to this problem. I need to also 'test' playing a DVD with Dell Media & Pinnacle. If I continue to run into problems I'll continue to ask for help; if it looks as if I can work around issue(s), I'll report accordingly. Thx again. 

Further my previous comment. While I can work around to play different DVDs, the real crux of the issue is how can I make a copy of a personal DVD (as I have done previously using Nero6) in that the process requires that the system be able to put the desired DVD in memory & then accept a blank DVD that can be burned. When I now try to do this, and I 'load' the DVD to be copied, I cannot put in a blank DVD without the system crashing and appearance of blue-screen error as noted in initial posting. Hope this makes some semblance of sense & something can be done. I noted in the blue-screen error the following (seemingly boiler-plate): "Disable bios memory options such as caching or shadowing." Indeed if this is the (or part of the) problem, how do I go about "disabling bios memory options...? Any thoughts about the increasing complexity of my problem?

I would check again for any packet writing programs, such as Sonic DLA or Roxio Drag-to-disc. Check add/remove programs. If you see one of these, uninstall it.

I have removed/deleted Nero 6 in its entirety, including the packet writing InCD program, and have tried to play DVDs using Dell Media...unsuccessfully. When it place any DVD into my D-drive the system crashes as it has recently...the latest error code being: 0x0000008E (0x0000005, 0x806F0753, 0xEC84F448, 0x00000000).

So, it seems as if I am back to square one and welcome any new thoughts you might have for me to correct the situation so that play & burn DVDs, as I have been doing on this computer for several years. Thanks again greatly.

Further, further trials & tribulations: after removing-deleting Nero 6 entirely & still get crashes, I reinstalled Nero 6 & successfully, amazing, used the copy DVD feature, though after the program "read" by DVD & the burned a new DVD copy, instead of the drive automatically opening on completion of the burn, the blue-screen system crash occurred. Still, the new copy was successfull, as I played it in a separate DVD player. So, seemingly, I can now continue to make DVD copies, but still plagued by the blue-screen crashes, seemingly when there is an (in my description) an overload of-in memory.

Is there a way to change (not add additional memory to current 512 MB) what I will refer to as "instant" or perhaps "virtual" memory in place at any single time? Again, please forgive my lack of technical understand or appreciation for accurate terminology. Thanks.

When you reinstalled Nero, did you exclude InCD?

It appears that when I reinstalled Nero6, I may have included InCD, as I've located (via Search, 'all files') InCD4305.exe in Windows\DownloadedInstallations.

Yet, InCD does NOT turn up in Control Panel's 'Add/Delete Programs' as an installed program.

Given this info, any suggestions?

(FYI, most recent error code at time of system crash...at conclusion of successfully burned copy of a DVD): 0x0000008E (0x0000005, 0x806F0753, 0xEC775438, 0x00000000). This represents a slight variation from the third parameter in previous message beginning 0xEC775...)

I believe if you run the installation CD, you can remove installed components. Try that.

Well...now I have uninstalled/deleted the InCD program from Nero 6...but...I just copied a DVD as done just previously and thought the copy process was successful, it again ended with the blue-screen system crash and the same error code beginning 0x0000008E ...plus the same parameters except for the only change being in the third parameter...most currently EC4E0438, which previously was EC775438.

Mystifying.

Something continues to be wrong...and I hope you are not too disenheartened to offer another suggestion or reason for the problem.

I think we've exhausted the things I can suggest. At this point, you should be looking through your dump file to diagnose the problem. You could try the XP forums for more help, but they'll probably want to know the contents of your dump file. For more help, take a look at this site.

My daughter has this same model, and at some point, I would probably consider reimaging the hard drive. I keep an image of the most recent clean installation of each of our systems just for this purpose.

Thanks again for sticking with me through everything. I have taken a look at majorgeeks.com & will methodically work thru debug suggestions there. Unfortunately, I am a minor geek...and may opt for a new Dell and Windows 7, something I had been hoping to hold off. Clearly, I recognize that I must have done something in the past few months that accounts for the unaccountable blue-screen crashes.

Life and computers just is/aren't easy, but still worthwhile.

A reinstallation of the OS would very likely work. But having just gotten one, I can't disagree with wanting a new system with Windows 7. :emotion-1:
