DVD Drive not seen in my computer

I have an inspiron N5050 and running windows 7 and all of a sudden the DVD/CD drive makes a whiring noise but then won't display in my computer. It won't work when importing cd's to iTunes either. Nothing seems to work. Please help.....

Hi mlhayes45,

You may check if the optical drive is getting detected in ‘Device Manager’. Please follow the steps below:

  • Press ‘Windows’ key + R on ‘Desktop’ screen
  • Type ‘devmgmt.msc’ in run box and press ‘Enter’
  • Click > sign next to ‘DVD/CD ROM Drive’

If the driver is listed there, you may delete Upper/Lower filters. You may refer to the link: http://bit.ly/32ERX. You may run the Microsoft Fixit given in the link.

You may check if the optical drive is getting detected in BIOS. Please follow the steps below:

  • Power on the system and tap 3-4 times at Dell logo to enter BIOS.
  • The optical drive should be listed under ‘Main’ as SATA ODD.

Keep me posted with the results. I will be glad to assist you.
