DVD-RW problem with Roxio Easy CD Creator 5
I have a Dimension 4550 desktop which came with a 4x DVD+RW drive with CD-RW. I'm trying to copy pictures from my hard drive to a Sony DVD+RW disk using Roxio Easy CD Creator 5. It's not working with this software. It tells me that "Disc in the recorder is not the proper media for this project." I have tried it with Memorex disks - same problem. Dell support told me to use either Sony or Maxell disks. Is this software by Roxio just not effective? I have not had a problem copying to CD-RW disks. Please help.

Are you sure the Roxio Easy CD Creator 5 will copy to DVDs?
I could be wrong, but I thought DVD capability came with rev 6.

Hi Carolyn,
The problem could be with your burner and the DVD+RW. Sony is good brand of disc, but all media just does not work with all drives. You might have better success with a DVD+R (1-4x) in a Sony, or verbatim.
Here is a link where you can find information about media compatability.

CarloynCS,
As Jimmy mentioned Roxio 5 needs the latest update to work with Windows XP and Windows XP SP1, however if you installed XP`s SP2, then it will not work. Also SP2 broke Nero 5 as well, needs version 6.
If you still have Sp1, then if you have not, update Roxio version 5, if this does not work, uninstall / reinstall Roxio. I have the information in Section 47 of the CD/RW link in my post.
If you applied XP SP2, you could uninstall it, but honestly your best bet would be to purchase Roxio Version 7 or Nero 6 as our Members recommended.
I wish you the best,
No disrespect guys but please as favor to me, use the proper reply button so the thread flows smooth in both of Dell views, not that hard to hit the Reply Button in the last message of a thread as I did within Jimmys, thank you..
Best Regards

Thank you to everyone who replied to my question. I hope that I can resolve my problem with either a newer version of Roxio or perhaps different software. You have all been very helpful.

There is a free update for 5.x.x Platinum to 5.3.5
and also an update to add drive support for CD/DVD burners that were released after the release of Easy CD Creator 5.3.5.

I finally succeeded and saved some .jpg (picture) files onto the DVD drive. What I did was go to the Dell web site and found there was an updated file for the DVD hardware I have on my computer... You can check your hardware by clicking on Start, then click on My Computer and then on the left hand of the window click on View System information, then make sure the Hardware tab is selected (these are the tabs close to the top of the window) and then click on Device Manager and then click on DVD/CD Rom drives and it will tell you what make/model of DVD drive you have. My DVD drive is a NEC DVD+RW ND-1100A and there was an updated Dell download for it, so I downloaded it. If this is the same type of DVD drive you have, the download is available at:
http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/format.aspx?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs&SystemID=DIM_PNT_P4_4550&os=WW1&osl=en&deviceid=3532&devlib=32&category=0&releaseid=R59801
If you have the same kind of DVD drive as I do, make sure you don't have anything in the drive when you unzip the file, or you might have to do it again for it to work right.
Well the DVD drive is finally recognized! I put a Verbatim DVD+RW disc in after sooooo many failed attempts to save pictures to it and waaaa-laaaa it worked........what I did was drag the picture files from the My Picture folder onto the My Computer Drive Letter and it finally worked.......I had tried to do this before (bypassing the Roxio software and it failed each time before, no matter what I tried)..........so the download of the R59801.exe from Dell must have done the trick for it to finally even show up.
This stuff can be soooo frustrating and time consuming when things just don't happen the way they are supposed to.
Good Luck to you and hopefully your DVD drive will be recognized very soon so you can start recording or saving files to it.
:smileyhappy:

and is for Windows 2000 and Windows XP. Did Dell not test out that
DVD drive before offering it as an option?

Hi CarolynCS,
The NEC 1100a has not faired well and there were many complaints. The Dell firmware did help a number of people, unfortunately not all. Click on the CD/RW link in my post and scroll to Section 8-3, article 11 for additional information after applying the firmware update.
Also, I am allowed to mention / supply the following link per Dell-Moderator instructions as long as I state: "The use of a non-Dell validated firmare will void the warranty on the drive and you use at your ouwn risk"
With that said, the Dangerous Brothers released a "hacked" firmware that helps the drive and also converts it to a NEC 1300a, allowing the use of "DVD-" media

Oot: Not exactly correct… NO DVD can be written without software!
There is nothing in W2K to write to any optical media and XP can only write (Roxio burn engine) to CD media.
So while you may think you bypassed Roxio, you did not and DirectCD was doing the writing.
