DVD constant noise

Hi  - I have a 4600 Dimension 2.6 768 RAM 80 Gig HD with a HT-DT-ST-DVD-ROM GDR8162B DVD ROM drive. When I play a music CD or a DVD movie in the DVD-R drive it sounds like a jet engine - the CD and the movie play fine but the noise ..... Is this normal?

Thanks for any information!

Hi Beatrice,
I read in one of the other conferences, that on their systems the side strap / bracket did not fit well, one ended up being loose, he was able to Snap in it correctly but the other person ended up putting a small piece of tape to take up the slake, which he stated stopped the noice, poor design was his thoughts. I have not had the chance to work with a 4600 yet, so I cannot say. My sister`s 8250, has these bracket but the fit is firm in hers. Can you tell if the drive is seated firmly in the bay?

Best Regards

Thanks for the reply - the drive is pretty secure - sounds like a loud fan - constantly when a music CD is playing.

I think what you are describing is normal for your drive.  On newer drives the CD spins faster for faster reads and data transfer.  It sounds like a fan(or a jet) starting up and continues as long as the PC is accessing the drive.  The noise is intrusive but your drive is working fine.

Thank you for the reply.  I thought it was normal also except I put the exact same audio CD in the CDRW drive and no "jet" or loud fan noise - just plays the CD fine.  I'm going to rent a DVD movie and see what it does with that.  I can understand some start up noise but not for 47 minutes straight.

Again, thanks for the reply!!

Thanks - I did call Dell late this afternoon and they're going to replace the DVD drive.  By the way, I just ordered a Plextor 708A myself to copy a lot of my old VHS tapes and perform some backup jobs etc.  This ought to be rich - setting up the old Betamax, VCR, etc and copying tapes - I hope it goes OK.  If I get any "tips" for people who want to do this I'll pass them along to you.

Thanks again for your help and advice.

Hi Beatrice,
Not that I want to disgree with this new guy but a little noise is normal but not a jet plane. I just picked up the Plextor 708a DVD+/-RW and the drive is very quiet. If drive is one of Dell`s OEM, please consider contacting them once again and discuss this issue or live with the jet plane.

Best Regards
