DVD drive not seen by Windows 8
I have a Dell Inspiron 537 with Windows 7 originally. The installed and working DVD drive is a TSST DVD+-RW TS-H653G ATA drive.
I recently installed WIndows 8 in dual boot. When I boot with Windows 8, the DVD drive is not seen. When I go to the Device Manager and I look at the Properties of the DVD drive, I have the following message in the Device status box (I am giving here a translation of the message in french)
This peripheral device is not actually connected to the PC (Code=45).
To correct this problem, reconnect the device to the PC.
The fact is that the DVD is still working fine when booting with Windows 7.
Do I need a new driver or a new device or what else ?

Hi Marcel Painchaud,
I appreciate the time and effort that you took to troubleshoot the issue. Please perform the steps below:
1. Run Command Prompt as an Administrator. Type cmd in Windows 8 modern UI and press cltr+shift+enter
2. Type following and say enter
reg.exe add "HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\atapi\Controller0" /f /v EnumDevice1 /t REG_DWORD /d 0x00000001
3. Reboot the system
Once system is restarted check if the DVD drive works fine.

No, I found and installed an updated version of the firmware for the DVD drive (from DW10 to DW30) but it does not make any difference. The DVD drive is still working when I boot with WIndows 7 but it is unseen when I boot with Windows 8.

I followed the instructions in that link and it didn't work on my Dell Inspiron 660 desktop commuter.
One question though in the instructions it says type the following line of copy and say enter.
Did you mean type the word enter or hit the enter key?
Also to save time I copied and pasted that long line of copy.
Was that ok or should I have typed it out?

Hi
I too have a Dell Inspiron laptop and since the date I installed windows 8, my CD/DVD drive is not working. whenever I insert a DVD, it doesnt show up on explorer and says insert a dvd / burn new disc etc. I followed the instructions given about the registry change still no luck. Please help

Have you updated the latest firmware for the Optical Drive from our support site? If not, please update the same. Also, in your reply please include the exact System Model Number of your Dell Inspiron Laptop.
Do reply with results.

Windows will refuse to see SATA DVD drives when the BIOS SATA OPERATION is set to ATA instead of AHCI. If you installed 8 in ATA mode you will need to reinstall from scratch in AHCI mode.
You would then need to install the CHIPSET drivers as well as AMD SATA or INTEL RST
The last thing to check when it see"s the drive is the region CODE in device manager.

Not sure how to get to run in Admin type to do this? I know it is Windows 8 not seeing DVD driver but I have up dated Bios as instructed, I have updated everything but there is no clear network path to DVD recognized by this system. This has been a slow decline until nothing plays. Diagnostic reads it is fine and working correctly with all updates. Any ideas or help using the fix you posted would be appreciated greatly.
