Dell DVD-+R/W P/N C3284-A00

Hey Everyone, I recently got this replacement DVD R/W. It plays CDs and DVDs fine, but will not recognize DVD-R discs. I've tried multiple discs and different brands, and they all play fine in othere DVD players. When I put the disc in, the drive name goes from DVD-RW Drive (D:) to CD Drive (D:) and it shows the disc as blank. The website specification claims that this drive is compatable with DVD-R discs. I have already returned one as defective and have the same problem with it's replacement. I have found Dell's support less than helpful. Any suggestions? Thanks!
