Dell Dimension 2350 HDD Upgrade
Hi folks,
First post here, so go easy on me!
My machine, as above, has the original 60Gb hard drive ( shipped January 2003 ), and all is OK. However, a friend of mine bought a Hitachi Deskstar 7K160 160Gb 3.5" PATA Internal Hard Disk Drive for his pc, which is no longer required. This is the item. Can I use it on my D2350? The only upgrades I have done to my machine are a RAM ( to 1Gb ) and of course XP to SP3.
I have the reinstallation discs that shipped with the pc, and the XP Reinstallation disc is SP1.
I read that the 2350's originally shipped with 120Gb max hard drives? As my BIOS has not been upgraded since new, would it be able to handle 160Gb capacity?
I really would appreciate any advice offered.

Yes, this drive will work in your 2350. You'll need a bracket to hold the drive, which can be easily found by searching online.

The bracket for a second hard in the D-2350, can be purchased from HERE
This option requires a three connector 80 wire IDE cable, this could be purchased from a local computer store.
Dell has not published instructions for installing a second IDE/EIDE hard drive in a D-2350, but as the D-4600 has the same case and chassis, you can use the same instructions <ADMIN NOTE: Broken link has been removed from this post by Dell> for the physical installation.
A hint > Set the hard drive jumpers to "Cable Select".
After the physical installation, check in the setup, that the second drive is set to auto [on] and then use XP's disk management to partition and format the drive.

No, the Dimension 2350 supports IDE hard drives and there are no 2tb IDE hard drives manufactured
Yes, providing you install a PCI SATA controller card and a SATA 2tb hard drive and are using a XP SP1, or higher reinstallation disc.

Yes, but you will have to install a third-party SATA card like the Syba 150R. If you do so and wish to retain the front panel LED functionality, you'll need to attach a separate LED to the activity pins on the SATA card.
I did that with my 2350 and it boots from a 2tb SATA hard drive. Larger drives can be used for data storage, but 32-bit Windows cannot boot from them and they require the Guid Partition Table partitioning scheme.
Here is package including a replacement LED suitable for use in the 2350. You'll only need one of the package, but it's no more than buying a separate LED cable from the likes of Directron.
