Floppy Diskette Seek Failure - Help!
Dear Dell,
I have a Dimension 8400 from you and have recently noticed that everytime I boot up my PC an error message appears in DOS:
'floppy diskette seek failure. Strike the F1 key to continue, F2 to run the setup utility'
I don't have a floppy disk drive on the computer, either internal or external - just one DVD drive and one CD-RW drive.
I have searched through your Knowledge Base and it suggested I enter the F2 setup and disable the 'Diskette Drive' under the 'Drives' sub-list. The factory default is 'Internal' but as per the instructions I changed it to 'Off' and saved/exited setup.
This solved the problem in the sense that I no longer have a 'floppy diskette seek failure' error message, but this option has also disabled my DVD and CD-RW drives - they no longer are listed in My Computer and don't work! Restoring the option back to 'Internal' and/or resetting all the setup-factory-defaults brings back the 'floppy diskette seek failure' error message but ALSO, my DVD and CD-RW drives still don't work!
Please advise me on fixing this 'floppy diskette seek failure' error message and also in restoring my access to my DVD and CD-RW drives which no longer work.
Thanks - Peter.

Peter:
This is a user forum; we're not Dell employees. No problem, hope I can help.
You can restore your BIOS defaults as follows. Boot to system setup, turn on caps lock, scroll lock, & number lock. Press ALT+E then ALT+F, save settings & exit. See if your optical drives are restored. If so, restart, boot to system setup again, and set the diskette drive to Off, save settings and exit.
