Hard Drive detect issues on Inspiron n4010

I am facing problems with my internal hard disk and I am not able to narrow down to the source of problem. It started when my laptop suddenly stopped responding. Logging in to the text console gave ext4 read error. I restarted the system after a forced shutdown only to find no operating system found error. The BIOS diagnostic was showing no hard drive found warning.

I started the system from a Persistent USB, which was not able to display the internal hard disk partitions. A 'sudo fdisk -l' showed no hard drive . However, after a few hours I found my internal hard disks partitions mounted. (There are 3 partitions, 1 ext4 and 2 ntfs). All were mounted and accessible. I backed up a few important documents and restarted the system. The grub menu showed up and the system worked flawlessly for about 6 hours and then froze the same way as earlier. I had to revert to the persistent USB.

This has happened 3 times in the past 2 days.

I am currently running the laptop from a Persistent mode Ubuntu USB. Occasionally the internal hard disk partitions become detected and then disappear again after a few hours.

Please help me find if indeed it is hard drive fault or some connections issue.

Note : I use Ubuntu 12.10

Hi vibhavsinha,

I would suggest you to update the BIOS using the link below.

http://dell.to/19puCi1

Also, please reseat the hard drive by following the steps from hard drive section in the link below.

ftp://ftp.dell.com/Manuals/all-products/esuprt_laptop/esuprt_inspiron_laptop/inspiron-14r_service%20manual_en-us.pdf

Then, I would suggest that you run the diagnostics on the computer by following the steps mentioned below and check if there is any issue with the hardware on your system.

  1. Turn on or restart the computer.
  2. Immediately at the Dell logo screen, starting tapping the key once a second until the One Time Boot menu appears (if the computer boots to
Windows turn the computer off and try again).
  3. At the One Time Boot menu, press the arrow key to highlight Diagnostics, PSA+ or Enter ePSA, then press to begin the hardware Diagnostics.
  4. Write down any error codes listed. Reply to us with the error codes.

I can not update from the link you sent because that require the hard disks to be detected and booted-from so that I could log into windows 8 to install the BIOS driver. However, I checked the installed BIOS version and it is A13 the same version as mentioned in your link.

I have already reseated the hard drive with the help of the same manual and a few Youtube videos.

I ran Diagnostics from the boot menu but could not find any error codes. As I have already mentioned, it just gives a warning of no hard drive :

** Hard Drive - DST Short Test  **
Test Reuslts : Warning
Msg : No hard drive detected

Still, often the HDD partitions would come detected and get mounted for a few minutes before disappearing again. These are making me believe that the fault might not be of the HDD but somewhere else.
