Help! My DVD/CD player is lagging/sometimes no audio!
Hi! Whenever I pop in a CD or DVD into my Inspiron 6400, the playback is very choppy/laggy. As well sometimes when I play a DVD, there won't even be any audio. Any idea what might be wrong, and how it can be fixed? If it helps, the DVD/CD player I have is a Sony DVD +-RW DW-Q58A. Oh yeah, and I'm running on Windows XP: Media Center Edition.

Check that your drive is in DMA mode and not PIO mode here .......
Start | Control Panel | System in classic view | Hardware tab | Device Manager
Click on the (+) next to IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers. Right-click the channel
the DVD drive is on and select Properties. Click the Advanced Settings tab.
The Transfer Mode box should be DMA if available and the below that the
Current Transfer Mode box should be Ultra DMA Mode 2

It says that my transfer mode is "DMA if available"
but the current transfer mode is PIO Mode, and it doesn't allow me to change it. What else could be wrong?

How do I know which channel the DVD drive is on?
These are the following choices for me:
Intel(R) 82801GBM/GHM (ICH7-M Family) Serial ATA Storage Controller - 27C4
Primary IDE Channel
Ricoh Memory Stick Host Controller
Ricoh MMC Host Controller
Ricoh xD-Picture Card Host Controller
Secondary IDE Channel

OK, the solution you posted above seems to have corrected half the problem :smileyhappy:
The playback is no longer choppy, so that's the good news.
One problem still exists...
I tried playing a DVD, but no sound play. I'm certain sound works for all other applications (normal computing, CDs, iTunes...). Any ideas what might be wrong?

the software you are using to play the DVD. Often it is set to
5.1 or something like that and it should be 2-speaker.

In the Control Panel you will find the Sound setups.
Also, in the playback software for the DVD you may
find the Preferences and/or Setup options.
Check those for any possible speaker setups and configurations.

What DVD Decoder is installed on your system?
What playback software are you using to play DVDs?

Umm, I am not exactly too sure which DVD decoder I'm using... how do you check?
I just use regular Windows Media Center or Windows Media Player to play my DVDs.
It's a Sony DVD+-RW DW-Q58A player if that helps. :)
