I couldn't find anything closer than this post to answer my question...mostly because I'm just too tired to look anymore...sorry about that. But, if I put a CD in the DVD drive (read only), can I burn a copy of data files from the DVD to the CD/RW? And, If I have a data file on a CD, how can I copy them to my hard drive? Sonic doesn't seem to want to recognize the data file, and there doesn't seem to be a way of copying from the disk to the hard drive in that program. Am I doing something wrong, or is Sonic not set up for this operation? I have several disks of information (using NTI) to burn the data files from my old PC that I want to copy to the new PC. On Win98, all I had to do was open My Computer, click on the drive (i.e. CDROM), and it would open up the setup.exe. Or, if I was just copying from a CD that I burned, it would open up the files, and I could Move them to my hard drive. The CD/RW and DVD that I have on the new 4600 don't seem to work that way. In fact, I get error messages saying that the "Devise is not responding". I had some trouble getting the DVD to open, but eventually figured it out.  So do I need some other program or software to do these functions? Thanks in advance for any help. Paul

Thanks for the response Tom. I can tell you that I have Dual Drives 16x DVD rom Drive and 48 X CD-RW Drive. And that under the 'properties' on each drive it has HL-DT-ST-CD-RW GCE-8483B, and HL-DT-ST- DVD Rom GDR8163Bm and under 'Manufacturer' it has (Standard Disk Drives). Other than that, there is no other information that I can find. They came with the new PC. Paul

Tom

Thanks for the info.  It worked after I finally got my computer to recognize that I had a CD-dvd drive.

Thanks again Tom. Unfortunately, there are no firmware updates for either the cd-rw or the dvd-rom. The cdrw seems to be working for music, but I still don't seem able to transfer files from my cd data that I burned from the other PC. I'm beginning to think that the easiest thing to do is get a portable hard drive, download from the old PC, and then up load it to the new one.  Then figure out the problem with the DVD and CD-RW later. I need my security porgrams on worse than I need to figure out what's up with the drives. Now the new MS XP-SP-2 upgrade seems to be available, so I don't know what to do. Load it up first, then put my other programs on, or put the other programs on, then download the XP upgrade. Any suggestions? (Specifically, I have Norton System Suite, Zone Alarm, and Pest Patrol, which I recently renewed...I know I can download the programs from their sites, or in the case of Norton, use the disk, then put in the Reg Key, then update everything. What I'm not sure about now is, to do this before I do the XP upgrade or after). And, what about the versions of Norton that are on the new PC...do I uninstall them first? What happens with Norton Security Suite if you try to uninstall it? Thanks, Paul

Hi Tom. No...they are not word or word perfect. They are program files like Norton System works, Zone Alarm, Pest patrol...stuff that I have on my old PC, that I would like to have on the new one. Mostly because I have recently renewed them, and I am used to how they work. I suspect that I don't really need them on this new machine, since it seems to have one form or another of most of these functions. Something is ringing in my head about 'An old dog learning new tricks'... Maybe I just need to bite the bullet and get on with the new stuff. By the way, after rebooting, the CD-RW seems to be working again. I could read the files on the cd I burned on the old PC, and it seems that I could upload them. But, since XP has new Norton stuff on it, I'm not sure where to upload the files if I decide to try that...should I upload to the existing Norton files, or create a new program file and then install it? I don't want to screw up what I've got or create conflicts. I should probably be writing Norton about this. Perhaps they will transfer my renewal to the newer stuff. Apparently, what I have on the new PC has to be renewed in 3 months, and I just paid for a year on the old Norton stuff. Thanks again for your help. Paul

Thanks for your help Tom. I suppose that if I d/l them or reinstall, then I can get my settings off the cd I burned. Sounds like the the easiest and maybe safest way to go. Thanks again. P.
