Inspiron 1545 Won't boot from CD
Hello,
My hard drive recently crashed, and I haven't been able to boot the system from the original reinstallation DVD that came with the computer.
I have put the new, blank hard drive in place of the old one, and I've already made the system boot with the CD/DVD drive first in sequence I've also run a full diagnostics test by pressing F12.
I got the following message:
Error Code 0152.
Msg: Error Code 2000-0152
Msg: Optical Drive 0 - incorrect status: 1A Error register: 0020h
Sense information: (02-0401).
Sense data: 71h 00h 02h 00h 00h 00h 00h 0Ah 00h 00h 00h 00h 04h 01h 00h 00h 00h 00h
The given error code and message can be used by Dell Technica Support to help diagnose the problem.
Do you want to continue testing?
Yes or No or Retry
My system came with Vista Home Premium 32-bit, and runs 3GB memory with an Intel Pentium T4200 / 2.0 GHz CPU.
Can anyone please help? I bought this machine a little over 3 years ago, and although I'm way overdue to get a new system, financially this is not an option for me at this time. Needless to say, I'm alreay out of warranty.
Thanks,
Edwin

Nikhil,
Thank you very much for your reply. I reseated the Optical Drive and ran the diagnostics tool, but the test seems to have failed again, as I received the same error code. Before my laptop's hard drive crashed, I had no issues with the optical drive, as I was able to open it, insert CDs and get them to run properly.
Seems like I'm running out of options, and all I really need is to be able to boot the software I have in the original CD that came with my product. Any other suggestions? Thanks again for taking the time answer my questions. I appreciated it very much.

Hi Laplena,
Error Code 2000-0152 means the optical drive is in Incorrect Status. We would have reseat the Optical Drive.
Before performing the steps, read and follow the safety instructions in Dell Knowledge Base Article: "Precautionary Measures for Personal Safety"
Remove any and all power sources Including but not limited to: AC Adapter, Battery, or Desktop Power Cord, before you remove or reinstall an item in your computer.
Please see the Service manual for instructions on how to remove and replace the CD/DVD Drive. Be sure to remove and reinstall the cables for the Optical Drive if you are on a Desktop Computer.
After reinstalling the Optical Drive re-run the diagnostics and check the functionality.
Write back to us with results, I’d be glad to assist further.

Hi Laplena,
Please try booting the computer from optical drive through a resource disk or operating system disk.
If the computer is booting from the optical drive, then the problem could be with the hard drive and it needs to be replaced.
In case the system has active warranty, please private message the system service tag, contact number and registered owner’s name.
