Inspiron 5100 Hard disk replacement/upgrade
I am trying to upgrade my inspiron 5100 hard drive from 40gb to 160gb since my laptop doesn't recognize my old HD.
I have received the new hard drive, but the pins do not protrude out of the back of the drive case. So, when i slide the hd into the slot it doesn't connect. The old 40gb HD connected fine since the pins did stick out of the case. Is there some kind of adapter I should be using? thanks for any help. my bios is A30.
Hope this makes sense. I want configure this laptop for linux.

You need to remove the blade connector from the old hard drive and put it on the new hard drive.
I hope you bought a PATA/IDE hard drive and not a SATA drive.

Not sure if you got an answer for this - there is a little bar - not sure of what it is called that presses on over the pins on the back of your hard drive. Once this is in place, it will stick out beyond the caddy and will allow you to plug in the hard drive. This bar is black and has brass contacts across one side and little holes for the pins on the other.
