LG DVD-ROM DRN8080B won't read DVD-R burned disks
I have a Latitude Cpx laptop with a Dell DVD ROM which is identified as "LG DVD-ROM DRN8080B".
It won't read most DVD-R (or DVD+R) movies which I have created. The drive sort of grinds and hangs up the system. (Sometimes they will work, but I can't pin down a pattern.)
I suspect the firmware needs to be upgraded. The current level is 1.09.
Does anyone know where to get an upgrade, if one exists? Or, assuming I'm wrong about this, is there any advice on how to make the drive work?
I'm running Win98 SE and using WinDVD, both as provided when the system was bought. (I inhereted the laptop from someone else, but I'm pretty sure they didn't tweak anything after purchase.)

It is listed as enhancing the drive's ability to read DVD+R media.
Maybe it will help.

Thanks for the lead to the updated firmware. I'm a little hesitant to apply it since my laptop isn't listed in the compitable systems list. Do you know what would happen if I applied the update to my DVD-ROM while it is in my Latitude CPx? Thanks for the help!

Well, I ramped up my courage and burned the new firmware. Wahoo! The drive reads then all now!

I'm not able to do it through Windows 2000 by booting from a CD.
I get an error that reads, cannot write to file.
I have a Lattitude C600.
Any ideas?

Hi,
I used the floppy drive which normally plugs into the bay as an external drive. You can buy a cable to do this here: http://www.parts-people.com/index.php?action=item&id=1207&prevaction=category&previd=20&prevstart=15
Sometimes they are also available on eBay for a better price.
On my Latitude Cpx all I had to do was make sure bios would boot from a floppy and plug the cable and floppy drive in. It boots like a charm.
On another note, the firmware did IMPROVE the reading of burned DVD's, but it isn't as good as I originally thought. Reading burned DVD's is, at best, an enigma. Sometimes they do, sometimes they don't and I don't have the decoder ring to figure it out.

I'm afraid I can't help with the driver issue. I'm running Windows 98se on my laptop and the native drivers are being used. All I can see is that they are provided by Microsoft and dated 4-23-1999.

Hi,
Further poking about shows that there is an INF file used with this drive. It is: MSCDROM.INF.
If you want a copy of this file from me, send me your e-mail address. Also, check out DriverGuide.com for a copy which seems to support LG drives. (Are these really LITEON drives under the covers???)

Hi,
More info from DriverGuide.com:
Try "d6f38703.exe". It looks like a good candidate for your XP installation. I found it by doing a basic search for all drivers in LG electronics, cd-rom/cdrw/dvd, windows-XP.
Lots of drivers/firmware updates here for you to look at.
