Matshita UJ8C2 drive missing
On my Inspiron 15 3521 the Matshita UJ8C2 drive is missing. It doesn't show in Device Manager or My Computer. Last night I copied files to DVDs and
made an audio CD with no trouble. I don't know if I should try re-installing the driver, I haven't been able to find it. I haven't been able to find where to enter
a trouble ticket with Dell. The pc is still under warranty. I called Best Buy, where it was purchased. They suggested to bring it in but I thought I'd try a new
driver or something else first.

Yes, iTunes is known to cause this problem, especially by uninstalling and reinstalling the program. Have you got everything working now?

Hi Stelcom66,
Please click the link below to my troubleshooting guide. The first thing you should do is run the Dell diagnostics from the F12 utility partition. If the diagnostics report that there is no DVD drive, you probably need to replace it.

Only after I called the number for support issues not covered by the standard warranty did I start making progress. The agent gave me the phone number for hardware support which I never saw on the website. I spoke to a technical rep that connected to my pc remotely and was able to resolve the issue. One of the steps was to run diagnostics as mentioned. Surprisingly, all tests passed including the CD/DVD drive portion. The agent explained the driver is built into Windows and was not likely the issue. I watched as she went into the registry and deleted the 'upper filter'. The CD/DVD drive was then present. I mentioned the trouble may have occurred after I de-installed and re-installed iTunes trying to get the library in synch. When I launched iTunes after the CD?DVD drive was restored a message informed that the registry for the CD burner had changed, and to re-install iTunes. I will not do that - I'll only use iTunes for purchases.
I wonder what the formatting of my original post was off? Spaces between sentences.

Meant to say I wonder 'why' the formatting was off. That post formatted fine. I wonder is it typical for a program used for CD burning to modify the registry? I suppose I could have done a System Restore, but there were no restore points created after I bought the pc. I'lll need to see if restore points can still be created.

So it was very likely iTunes. Everything is working thanks - but will avoid iTunes except for purchases. I see you have some links such as "upper and lower filter trick"... the solution to my trouble was in fact an 'upper filter' - whatever that is. I will check the information you have.
