NTI Backup Now won't recognize my cdrw drive.
I have a new Inspiron 8200 with a Matshita UJDA740 DVD/CDRW. I recently purchased NTI Backup Now Deluxe to handle my backup needs. The problem is that Backup Now won't recognize my drive. NTI has confirmed that this drive is on their supported drives list. NTI tech support says they have had some problems with XP and some drives (attributed to ASPI driver files?). They suggested that I reinstall Windows XP which I am reluctant to do. Does anyone know of an easier fix?

well xp does not have an aspi layer which may or may not be the problem.
suggest that you don't install adaptec latest 4.72 version but use ForceAspi from http://www.cyrus.troy.btinternet.co.uk/downloads.htm which installs version 4.60 & seems to work with all software applications unlike the 4.72 version. installing an ASPI layer will not harm your software.
you'll need to unzip the file & there's a readme on what to do.

I followed your suggestion about installing ForceASPI and it appears the ASPI layer has been created correctly. But, Backup Now still doesn't recognize the CDRW drive. Is there something else I need to do in XP to "activate" the ASPI layer?

I had the same problem, only with NTI CD MAker 6.5.. Got the same response from NTI tech support. I did a search on the hard drive for NTIASPI.DLL and found that RealOne uses the same DLL for CD Burning. By copying that version of the DLL into the NTI Directory, all seems to be working fine now.
