New CD drive still not working

I have spent countless hours on the phone with Dell support the alst few weeks only to have a new optical (CD/DVD drive) drive shipped to me over the weekend. I installed it and it seemed to work temporarily.

However, I am putting CD-R in the drive and it will not read it at all (nor a DVD). The light flashes maybe once, if at all, and makes no sound.

I am unable to read or record on dics. Help! I am fed up with this.

Could you please have a look in device manager and report back if you see any error messages or exclamation marks regarding your optical drive?

I just checked and there are no error messages or exclamation marks; it says the devices are working properly.

Note: I have an Inspiron 1100 (forgot to put that in the original post) if that makes any difference.

I also have the same problem with my Inspiron 1100, again a new Cd Drive made no difference. Any advice welcome as this is starting to drive me nuts. Thanks

I have the same issue! Was this ever resolved or did anybody figure it out? I'm looking at either replacing the drive or just buying as USB drive (and going to a tablet!)

I don't know what the answer could be. I'll be wasting more time on the phone (with someone I cannot understand) this week. Hopefully I can come back with some results.

I have got to the route of the problem. It turns out my hard drive is knackered and needs replacing. Very frustrating as it is under 2 years old. I know this will not help but maybe it is something worth checking before investing too much time trying to suss it.

Good luck!
