Norton Ghost 10.0 cannot create restore point "target disk full" Help!!!!

I have an XPS 400  with 2 X 160GB hard drives running Norton Ghost 10.0.  The very first time I try to create a restore point I get the error message 'target disk full'.  How can the target disk be full when it is 160GB?  My C drive only has 35GB worth of programs/files on it.  It says I only have room for 18GB on the ghost D drive.  Am I missing something obvious?

The backup disk is assigned less than 40 gigs. Open Ghost and
in Recovery use Optimize Recovery Point Storage. Your 1st and last restore points should be all you need to keep.

I have the same problem  28G of primary data  norton ran for about 2 weeks and stopped doing backups because target disk is full
optimize recovery points takes about 30 minutes to tell me it cannot consolidate recovery points because the disk is full..
 
i cant do a full backup because..  yep disk is full
do i have to delete the existing recovery points and full backup
then punch in a new one?
 
(E5150 with 2x160G SATA harddrives)
37G ghost partition.
 
could it be possible that the ghost partition is too small?
