Poweredge T110 and 3TB SATA disk support
I have just bought a Poweredge T110 server, running Windows Server 2008 R2 Foundation 64-bit. I am trying to add a 3 Terabyte Hitachi Deskstar disk (H3D30006472S) as a data disk (not a boot disk). The disk is connected to the built-in SATA controller.
I have configured the disk with a GPT partitiion, but Windows "Disk Management" reports it only has a capacity of 746GB.
If it's relevant, the boot disk has been supplied with MBR partitions, I think the BIOS has to stay in "BIOS" mode.
I was hoping that a brand-new server running the latest 64-bit OS would support 3TB data disks out-of-the-box, please could someone advise what I need to do?

I know Asus provide a software solution for overcoming the current operating system limitations that prevent a hard disk drive from utilizing more than 2048GB (also known as 2.2TB) with their motherboards. http://event.asus.com/mb/2010/Disk_Unlocker/
Not sure what you can use in your case unfortunately...

Apologies for resurrecting this old thread which I started several months ago, but can anyone comment on whether 3TB SATA disks are ever likely to be supported on my Poweredge T110 with just a driver update? I've had a look on the Intel website, and there doesn't seem to be anything relevant there.
I would really like to install 3TB SATA disks in my T110 without the added complexity of a 3rd-party disk controller card.

To answer my own question, I've installed the "Intel® Rapid Storage Technology" driver version 10.1.0.1008, which I downloaded from the Intel website, on my Poweredge, and it now seems to work fine with my 3TB drive.
I guess this is not supported by Dell, but it seems to work for me.

Thank you for the answer to your excellent question! An additional question: Are you able to create a raid array with your setup, or just access the full 3T drives in the Windows OS? I ask because creating a raid array requires bios support, in addition to OS support. I am thinking about creating a 4 x 3T raid array on the T110.

I'm not using the disk in a RAID array, it's just a single disk attached to the built-in controller. It's working OK so far.

did you have to load the Intel driver prior to OS boot? I installed in Windows 2008 server 64 bit and it shows drive capacity less than the actual drive capacity. I have a 4tb disk and it shows in disk management as 2 tb. Like you, I'm using a plain >2tb SATA HDD (no RAID). Note, it is a data drive (no OS on it). I was able to GPT partition it using disk mananger in W2k8, but it still shows no capacity beyond 2048GB.
