Primary hard disk drive 0 Failure - Please read and help!
Hi,
I would just like to thank those who help in advance!
I just installed a hard drive with Windows XP, it was running fine for about 2 weeks, its not more than 6 months old but it hasnt got a warranty as i got it as a spare part from my dads work office.
The thing is with it, last night it was making weird clicking noises when it restarted and it froze so i well shut the power switch and went to sleep.
This morning when my dad turned it on, it came up with the error message Primary hard disk drive 0 failure. I took out the harddrive and reseated the connectors. Still no luck. I then tried resetting the bios with Alt + F and Alt + E and that still did detect a hard drive was there but in the boot sequence it said Hard disk drive (Not installed) but it still was being dected.
I then pressed Ctrl + Alt + D to get diagonstics for the drive. It came up with the error message
Primary IDE:
Drive 0: QUANTUM FIREBALLP LM10.2 - Error attempting diagostics.
Is the hard drive dead? What is it i need to do?

Hi,
The drive is likely to be history.
Clicking noises are a very clear indicator of imminent hard disk failure.
You could check the serial number & details against the manufacturers web site as it may still be under warranty.
Solution is unformatunately a replacement drive.
I hope you don't have important data or school / college worok on the disk with no backup.

Hi,
There are basically two types of hard disk.
Those that have failed and those that will.fail.
Normally at an inconvenient time, with loss of critical data.
As a Dell techie put it
"He who laughs last and loudest probably made a backup."
Hard disk prices are very low, even external USB or firewire drives.

Haha you wouldnt believe this but this dell system 8100 Dimension is rubbish e computer has 4 drives, Floppy, DVD-RW, CD RW and ZIP, all 4 have been replaced as they have gone wrong. I just replaced the harddrive a year ago and lost data then, i lost data on my recent harddrive also but i did have backups but id idnt expect this one to lose it also!
THan ks for your help though, nah there wasnt much on it anyway, ihad a feeli ng this co mputer was going to crash on me sometime! ITS JUS ONE PROBLEM AFTER ANOTHER!!
