Problem with low speed CD-RW disc with high speed CD-RW drive.

Question

Hello,   Does anybody have this problem? I am trying to burn a CDRW (4x) with a 48x CDRW drive but it doesnt work. Do I need a highter speed of CD-RW disc or do I have serious problem?   TIA   JC

This is my uncle's computer. Anyway, the CDRW disc is Memorex and the CDRW drive is a Sony CRX217E. JC

What is the brand of CDRW disk you are trying to use?What is the Brand and Model of drive you are using?

Memorex CDRW disks are troublesome. A search of this forum will yield
numerous problems with Memorex rewritable media. Try another brand of
CDRW media. The Sony CRX217E can handle High-Speed Rewritable media,
such as 10X. Just avoid Memorex and the off-no name brands.

Perhaps you can respond to a similar problem. Have a SamSung CD-RW (48/24/48) in a 2003 Dimension 8250. It has been formatting, reading and writing to Memorex 4X Platinum CD-RW discs since the beginning... until perhaps 3-4 months ago.

Now the drive will not recognize a blank CD-RW (Memorex 4X) or a blank CD-R (Fuji) in the drive and I cannot format via Roxio Easy CD Creator 5.3.2.34. When I attempt to format, it asks to insert a blank disc regardless of the fact that I have a blank disc installed. However, the drive still reads and wites data CDs that have already been formatted. I have also run Dell Diagnostics to determine that the hardware is operating correctly and have been advised by Dell Chat session that the problem is likely a software one.

Short of trying a different brand of CD-RW, is there any other software on my WinXP system (or freebie software from the Net) to attempt to format blank CD-RW's? I really do not want to buy new CD-RW software, if I do not know if I have a software problem.

Hi AltaRed,Windows XP program will not format the disc. Nero has Demo version you can try but you first should uninstall Roxio`s Packet Writing Program DirectCD before installing Nero`s InCD.Since the Chat session suggested software, did you uninstall / reinstall update Roxio to see if this helped?Also, check for a possible firmwarer update for your drive through the Drivers & Downloads link under the Product Suppor tab above, enter information for your system and then scroll to Removable Media Storage Device.A few standard steps just to cover drivers and DMA; click on the D/RW link in my post and scroll to Section 15, article 1; Section 20, article 3; Section 12, article 2; Section 15, article 14.Best Regards God, grant me the senility to forget the people I never liked anyway, the good fortune to run into the ones I do and the eyesight to tell thedifference. Appreciate the attempt to help.  I did update Roxio from 5.2 something to 5.3.5.10 (the latest on the Roxio site) and I did install updated firmware R61056 for the SamSung drive from Dell Downloads to no avail.  The drive still will not detect a blank disc but appears to do everything else it is supposed to do. Meaning I can read files, drag and drop, write new files to a previously formatted and used CD-RW disc, etc.      I read a couple of other threads on this subject in the Roxio discussion forums but there was no apparent answer there (so far).  I did work through the articles you have suggested in the link and none of them apply... in that everything seems to be working properly via Device Manager, etc.   I am not sure it is a Roxio problem, because I also no longer get the Windows popup that occurs with a blank disc...asking what I want to do with it.  That used to happen automatically and thus it may be a Windows XP problem.    On the long shot that it could be a Roxio software problem, the only thing I believe I can do now is to actually uninstall and re-install Roxio though doing that seems to also have its problems.

AltaRed,Device Manager can say the drive is working properly and that not be the case, the articles I suggested will 'force' Windows XP to re-install the drivers and this can at times resolve a number of issue. However since you do not believe theses are relevant, you might consider using Windows XP restore feature, roll the system back to a date before the problem started.As for uninstalling / reinstalling Roxio, you should find on their forum reference to Roxio`s Zap program for a clean start with the software. I have updated WinXP to SP2 and I have Version 5 of Roxio. It is quite possible the problem has existed since installation of SP2 (I had several spare blank discs already formatted and thus don't precisely know when the problem would have started). May have to consider an update of Roxio (or research an alternative).

I will re-visit the articles for re-installation of the drivers. Only reason I mentioned they were "not relevant" is because the drive works for most operations. But of course, "most" isn't all.
